CARRIAGE-TOP.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,175, dated May 2, 1882.

Application filed November 9., 1881. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FERDINAND MEmEcKn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriage-Tops and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to-letters 0r figures of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in carriage-tops, and pertains to the peculiar form and arrangement of the bows, braces, and supporting-stat]dards.

My invention is further explained by reference to the accompanying drawing, which represents a perspective view of the same.

A and B are the main upright hows of the top. Said bows are respectively formed in one continuous piece, and each bow is connected at its respective ends to the respective sides of the carriage. The central part of said bows are curved outward from each other on a horizontal plane at an angle to their ends, as shown. The lower ends of said bows are connected with the sides of the body of the carriage by standards K and L, upon which they are supported, and to which they are secured by adjusting pivotal screws G and H.

(J and D are knee-jpint braces. Said braces are pivoted to bows A and B, and adapted to force said bows apart and tighten the cover, and also to draw said bows toward each other when desirous to fold or lower the cover.

E and F are small secondary bows, which are loosely pivoted to the main bows A and B, and are adapted to support the central part of the cover in a rounded symmetrical shape.

The respective ends of the secondary bows E and F and the respective ends of the kneejoint braces (J and D are secured to the main bows by the same pivots.

M M are hand-nuts to screws G and H, by which said bows A and B are rigidly clamped against said standards and the top adjusted at any desired angle.

N represents the covering, which is secured to the bows in the ordinary manner.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In carriage-tops, the combination of the two main upright bows A and 13, having their central parts bent outward from each other in a horizontal plane at nearly right angles to their ends, secondary small bows .E and F, and knee-joints G and D, said secondary small bows and said knee-joint braces beingsecured to said main bows A and B by the same pivots, substantially as set forth.
