Description

avwmatoz FH. KlSEFi FRANK I-I. KISEB, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
CARRIAGE-TOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 8, 1917.
Application filed June 24, 1916. Serial No. 105,720.
1 b all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK H. Kisnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at C0- lumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriage-Tops, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This irgyention relates to certain improvements in carriage tops and it is an object of the invention to provide novel and improved means whereby the carriage top preferably of a foldable buggy type may be effectively held in various adjustments relative to the vehicle body or seat structure.
Furthermore it is an object of the invention to provide a foldable arm having one extremity pivotally engaged with a vehicle body and its opposite end portion provided with means whereby the same may be adjustably engaged with a bow of the top for maintaining the same in diiferent positions.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my im proved top whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood. I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings. wherein Figure 1 is a view in elevation illustrating an embodiment of my invention in applied position; and
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view in perspective illustrating my device as herein embodied.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, T denotes a carriage top of a buggy type pivotally supported in a conventional manner with the vehicle body V and including the rear bow B having projecting outwardly and laterally therefrom adjacent one of its extremities the pin or bolt 1.
A denotes my improved locking arm which is herein disclosed as including twosections, the lower section having one end pivotally engaged, as at 2, with the vehicle body V and its opposite end portion overlapping the inner end of the second section of the arm and pivotally engaged therewith as at 3. One longitudinal margin of the second section of the arm A is provided with a longitudinally spaced series of notches ladapted to be engaged with the pin or bolt 1 whereby it will be perceived that the top T may be conveniently and effectively held in different positions about its connection 5 relatively to the vehicle body V.
The opposite longitudinal margin of the second section of the arm A is returned to afford a strengthening flange 6 and which also affords a stop for limiting the relative movements of the sections of the arm A when the same are adjusted into longitudinal alinement. The pivoted end por tion of the second section of the arm A opposite to the flange 6 is provided with the laterally directed stop 7 disposed at the same side of said second section of the arm A as the flange 6 and which serves to coact with the first section of the arm A for normally maintaining the sections of the arm in longitudinal alinement.
When my improved arm is not in use it will be perceived that the sections thereof may be readily collapsed or folded and swung downwardly so as to occupy a minimum of space and be out of the way. It is also to be noted that the first section of the arm A is capable of passing over the stop 7 and for which reason it is preferred that the first section of the arm A possesses a certain degree of inherent resiliency. It is also to be noted that a longitudinal margin of the first section of the arm A adjacent its pivoted end is beveled, as at 8, to increase the extent of relative swinging movement of the sections of the arm and which also contacts with the flange 6 to limit the inward movement of the first section of the arm A relative to the second section.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a top constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled. and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish tobe understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice, except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
A holding arm for a swinging member inclnding two sections, adjacent ends of said sections being in overlapping relation and pivotally connected one to the other, one of said sections being provided along one of its longitudinal margins with a series of spaced notches, the opposite longitudinal margin being provided with a flange tolimit the movement of the first section in one direction relative to the second section, said .first section at its longitudinal margin opposite to the flange and adjacent the free end of the portion thereof which overlaps FRANK H. KISER.
