Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 16 1,086, dated March 23, 1875; application filed November 10, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. AMIDON,
of Millers Falls, in the county of Franklin and State ot Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Childrens Carriages; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
' My invention relates to an improvement in childrens carriages; and it consists in two standards pivoted to each side of the body of the carriage to support the top, and which are made to cross each other, and provided with a suitable clamping or holding device, so that the top will be securely held in any desired position.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same.
(1. represents the body of the carriage, to which are rigidly secured the lugs c, which are preferably made to project up above the top edge of the body, as shown. Pivoted to these lugs c are the standards or braces d, which extend diagonally upward, so as to cross each other and have their upper ends pivoted to the lugs e on the connecting-rods g, which rods connect the upper ends of the standards together. The ends of theserods g are joined together by cross-bars e, which extend from side to side across the body a and support the top t. This top is secured to the curved cross-bars by means of any suitable clamping devices V, so that it may be freely moved from side to side at right angles to the length of the body, in order to protect the child from the rays of the sun when they come from one side. One of the standards on each side has a vertical slot out in it of a length proportioned to the amount of play which it is desired the top shall have, and through this slot is passed a set-screw, 0, or other clamping device, by means of which the two standards can be locked firmly in position, so as to retain the top at any desired angle.
By means of the braces, constructed as above described, the top can be moved either forward, back, or directly overhead, so as to adjust it at any desired angle; and by making the top adjustable sidewise it can be made to protect the child in any position. One great trouble with the ordinary folding-top carriage is that the carriage has to be turned around away from the sun, whereas with my top it is immaterial from what direction the sun shines.
These standards may also be used for tops of buggies and other such vehicles.
Having thus described my invention, I claim The combination of a carriage or buggy top with the two standards 61 and a clamping or locking device, substantially as set forth.
