IMPROVEMENT IN CNOPY-TO'PS FOR CHILDRENS CARRIAGES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 214,281, dated April 15, 1879; application filed February 13, 1879.

To all whom 'it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN M. CROSBY, of the city and county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Canopy-Tops for Ohildrens Oarriages, of which the following is a specification.

The Object of my invention is the employment o f suitable means for adjusting the canopy-top of childrens carriages to any angle either in the longitudinal or lateral direction of the carriage, so as to bring it into the proper position to screen the Occupant from the suns rays or from the weather in any direction; and the nature of my invention consists in the combination of the canopy with a curved bar, one end of which has a pivotal connection with the rear side of the seat or body Of the carriage, the canopy being connected with the bar by means of a slide, which is adjustable on the latter, so as to bring it to any desired angle in the longitudinal direction Of the carriage, the slide being held firmly in its adjusted position by means of a setscrew or other suitable device; and the invention also consists in making the connection of the lower end of the said bar with the seat or body of the carriage by means of a pivot, to admit of the bar being turned thereon to any desired angle, either to the right or left, to bring the canopy to any angle later` ally with the carriage, as fully described hereinafter.

In the accompanying drawings, which make a part of this specification, Figure l is a side elevation of the seat of a childs carriage, adjustable curved bar B, and canopy E. Fig. 2 is an end view of the slide G. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the same. Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of the seat A and parts attached.

Like letters of reference in all the gures indicate the same parts.

A is the seat of a childs carriage. B is a curved bar, the lower end of which is connected to the rear side of the seat by means of the swivel-plate C, to which the bar is permanently fastened, and the disk C and the screwbolt D, which has a milled head for its manipulation, or other suitable device. The disk C has arms a a a a, through which screws are passed for confining it to the seat.

E is the canopy, to the under side of which the slide G (shown in detail in Figs. 2 and 3) is attached by means of screws. The slide has slots c c in the projections d d for its attachment to the bar B, whereby it is adapted to be moved to any part of the bar to bring the canopy to any desired angle in the longitudinal direction of the carriage. To fully accomplish this purpose, the bar has a downward curve, 2, at its upper end, in addition to its upward curve, 1.

The slide is held iirmlyin its adjusted position by means of the set-screw D or any other suitable device, the screw having a milled head or other device for its manipulation.

The slide is tapped to receive the end of the p screw.

. The-bar B and slots o c ot' the slide E are of Wedge form, as represented in the detailed view of the slide in Fig. 2, to provide for the slide being tightlyconnected to the bar to hold the canopy in its adjusted position.

The bar B may be brought to any desirable angle, either to the right or left, by looserling the screw D for its adjustment to bring the canopy to any angle that may be desired laterally with the carriage; and hence, by the adjust-ment of the slide G upon the bar and the lateral adjustment of the latter, the canopy may be brought into any position which may be required to screen the occupant of the carriage.

The attachment of the curved bar B may be made to the rear side of the body of the carriage, if desired, instead of to the seat, as shown in the drawings.

I claim as my inventionl. The combination of the curved bar B with the seat or bodyof the carriage by means of a pivot, whereby the bar may be adjusted laterally upon any desired angle with the carriage, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination of the curved bar B, provided with the swivel-plate C, the disk C', and the set-screw D, Or other equivalent device, With the seat A or the body of the carriage, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. The combination of the canopy E, having a slide, G, and set-screw D', or equivalent device, with thc curved bar B, for the adjustment of the canopy in the longitudinal direction of the carriage, substantially as set forth.
