Description

'UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB XV. SLAIGHT AND JACOB NV. ANDROYATT, OF PRIN CES BAY, N. Y.
CLAMP FOR SETTING RIGGING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 102,605, dated May 3, 1570.
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that we, JACOB W. SLAIGHT and JACOB W. ANDROVATT, of Princes Bay, in the county of Richmondand State of New York, have invented a new and Improved.
Rope-Clamp for Setting Rigging; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ofthis specification.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of our improved rope-clamp, showing it applied for setting a lanyard. Fig. 2 is aperspective view, on an enlarged scale, of the clamp.
Similar letters of reference indicate c0rrespending parts.
This invention has for its object to provide an instrument for clamping and holding ropes for hoisting different kinds of articles, or for stretching or applying such ropes to the sides of ships on, other places without requiring knots to be tied or eyes formed in such ropes to enable their being applied to the tackleblock.
The invention consists in the combination of a notched Or toothed bar or plate, A, with a pivoted clamping-lever, B.
Thelever B is S -shaped,and is fitted through a slot of the bar A, being pivoted by a pin, a., to the same. The lower end of the 1ever B is formed into a jaw, c, for clamping the rope. The rope to be fastened is wound around the teeth b b of the bar A, and is made tense thereby, and is then held between the jaw c and the plate A. When the device is suspended fromv a rope, d, which is fastened to the outer end of the lever B, and drawn through an opening, e, of the bar A, the clamp will be powerfully applied to take a iirni hold of the rope at the lower end.
By means of this vinstrument the ropes will be preserved, as they are not exposed to the twist and injury subsequent to the making of knots or eyes. Fig. l shows it applied to a lanyard while stretching the same. It may also be used on all other ropes on board ships,
and all kinds of elevating machinery.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure, by Let-ters Patent- A rope-clamp consisting of thetoothed 'or notched bar A and clampinglever B, and arranged to operate as set forth.
JACOB W. SLAIGHT.
