SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 334.196, dated January 12, 1886.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM ROEMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles for Satchels, Pareel-Carriers, 8tc. and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of this invention is to reduce the cost and facilitate the operation of constructing bag-handles and fastening them to the frames of the bags, to obtain increased security for the handle, and to gain improved effects of ornamentation or finish.

The invention consists in the arrangements and combinations of parts, substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters indicate corresponding parts in each of the several figures, Figure 1 indicates a portion of a bag-handle secured to the frame of a bag or satchel. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same. Figs. 3, 5, and 6 are detailviews of certain parts for securing the handle-body to the frame, and Fig. 4 illustrates a blank from which one of said parts may be formed.

In said drawings, A indicates the body of the handle, and B the bag or satchel frame, the latter having suitable staples, studs, posts, ears, loops, or clasp-straps, a, to receive and hold the handle to the said frame. The said handle is provided at the extremities thereof with end pieces, I), which are preferably formed of or from a blank having the shape of that shown in Fig. 4. The said end pieces, when shaped to be applied to the handle, are provided at one end with a tubular or cylindrical part, 0, formed by turning the ears 0 of the blank together, a curved neck, 01, extending, when on the handle, up and away from the stud a, to give a gradual curve to the handle. At the opposite end the end piece is provided with grasping-jaws c, which extend to the sides of the handle, and are thereat perforated, to enable a pin or rivet, e, to pass through the handle and be Serial No. 168,666. at its extremities riveted in the said perforations, thus uniting the parts securely at this point. At the inner end of the tubular portion 0 the end piece is provided with a stop, f, formed in the metal of one piece, and adapted to hold the handle in proper relation to the stud or post a. To cooperate with said stop in holding the handle into fixed relation to the stud and to give a smooth finish to the end of the handle, I provide a cap, which fits over the end of the handle and tobular portion of the end piece, substantially as shown in Fig. 2, and engages the opposite side of the stud, holding the latter between the end of the cap and the stop or abutment, and is thereat held by a pin or rivet, h, which holds the cap, tubular end piece, and the extremity of the handle-body together, the said body being thus pinned twice, or at each end, whereby increased strength is attained.

I am aware of the state of the art as disclosed in patents to Lieb, August 28, 1877, No. 194,556; Schwerin, May 28, 1872, No. 127,273; and Simon, January 16, 1883, and I do not wish to be understood as claiming anything shown or described in said patents.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is- 1. In combination with the handle, bagframe, and asuitable stud, an end piece, 12, embodying in one piece the tubular part c, a stop, f, a curved neck, d, and jaws e, a cap, 9, covering said tubular partand eo-operating with said stop to hold said stud, and a pin which passes through said tubular part, cap, and the end of the handle, to hold said parts together, substantially as shown and described.

2. In a handle for bags, the end piece, b, embodying in one piece ears 0, forming the cylindrical portion into which the handle extends, jaws e, to grasp or extend to the side of the upper portion of the handle, a stop,f, and a curved neck, all said parts being arranged and combined substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
