PATENT Fries.
MAX 0. SCHMIDT, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y.
LOCK FOR POCKET-=BOOK OR S ATCHEL. FRAMES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,174, dated May 1'7, 1887.
Application filed March 31, 1887.
It) aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, MAX 0. SOI-IB'IIDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Frames for Pocket-Books, Satchels, and other Articles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in frames for pool; et-books, satch els, bags, purses, and other articles, as set fortlrin the following specification and claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a section in the plane y 3 Fig. 3, the jaws being closed. Fig. 2 is a similar section as Fig. 1, the jaws being open. Fig. 3 isa section in the plane am, Fig. 1. Fig. 4is a perspective view of a frame applied for use.
Similarletters indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, the letters A 13 indicate the jaws of a frame, connected by apin, pivot, orjoint, 0. One of thejaws as, for example, the jaw B--is provided with a head,F. WVhen the jaws are. closed, the head F, by suitable means, such as a lug, E, engages the jaw A, and thus holds thejaws closed. The jawAis shown as having a suitable engaging device, such as a recess, aperture, or shoulder, D, to engage the lug E. The head F is adapted to move so as to engage or release thejaw A. Joints or lugs G secure the head F to the jaw B. A spring, H, is shown as being adapted to force thehead F to its locking position. The spring H is secured to the jaw B by suitable means, such as a rivet, I. By having thelngs G fixed on the head F, and by having said lugs G adapted to play in suitable perforations, L, in the jaw B, and by having the spring I-I connected to thelugs G by suitable meanssuch as clamping, riveting, or soldering-the head F will be held to thejaw B, while said head is free to more to and from its locking position. In Figs. 1 and 2 the locking position of the head F is indicated by full lines and the unlocking position of the head F is indicated by broken lines.
When the jaws A B are closed, the head F sits against and covers the juncture of the jaws, so that no article can slip out or pass through at said juncture. Such covering of the juncture is of great importance in case the jaws A B are applied to such articles as purses in which metallic coin are kept, as such coin are prevented by the head F from working out of the purse between the jaws Serial No. 233,173. (No model.)
A B. One of the jaws-as, for example, the jaw B'is shown as having aflange or flanges, K, which rest against that portion of the juncture of the jaws A B which is not protected by the head F. The head F thus forms a secure closing device, and if said head is made smooth and ornamental and free from projections or jagged edges such head F is not apt to catch or tear any article of dress or any object coming in contact with the head F, and such head F can be made to give a pleasant appearance or finish to the article to which it is applied.
In Fig. 4 the head F, with its jaws,is shown as applied to a purse.
Of course the jaws may be applied to any article desired-such, for example, as valises, hand-bags, and other articles.
lVhat I claim as new, and desire to sccu re by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the hinged jaws A B, the latter having the top perforations, L, of the spring H, arranged within the pen forated jaw, and the head F, having an engaging device, E, and provided with the rigidlyattached lugs G, passing downward through the said perforations and acted upon by the spring, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the hinged jaws A B, the latter having the top perforations, L, of the spring H, riveted at or near the middle of its length within the perforated jaw, and having its ends arranged adjacent to the perforations, and thehead F, having an engaging device, E, and provided with the two rigidlyattached lugs G, extending down ward through the said perforations, and acted on, respectively, by the ends of the spring, substantially as shown and described.
The combination, with the jaws AB, the latter having the top perforations, L, and the lateral end flanges, K, of the spring H, secured at or near the middle of its length to the inside of the perforated head, and the head F, having the rigidly-attached lugs G, extending downward through the perforations, and secured, respectively, directlyto the ends of the spring, substantially as described.
IOC
In testimony whereof Ihavehereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
