SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,138, dated October 28, 1890.

' To on whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, LA IVIARTINE FRENCH, of Chicago, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looks for Satchels, Trunks, and Similar Articles, of which the following is a specification.

In the accompanying drawings I have shown a handsatchel containing the invention in the best form as yet devised by me, and it will be best understood from the subjoined description of the drawings.

Figure 1 is an elevation with the concealed portions of the locking mechanism shown in dotted lines, the bag being closed. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the inner side of one member of the frame, showing the latches, springs, and operatingcam. Fig. 3 is a cross-section with the bag closed. Fig. 4is a cross-section showing the application of the key. Fig. 5 shows the lock separate from the bag and adapted to be applied to ordinary frames.

1 is the body of the bag.

2 is the handle.

3 and 4 are the two members of the frame.

5 are lugs on part 3 of the frame.

6 are arms pivoted to the lugs 5, and of such size and shape that when the bag is closed they will extend down on the face of member 4, and their barbed ends will enter holes 7 therein. The handle 2 may be attached to the arms 6, as shown in Fig. 3, so that the weight of the bag when lifted by the handle will throw the arms into locking position, and if the bag be slightly open when lifted the arms,acting upon member 4,will automatically close and lock it.

8 are dogs or latches pivoted at 9 to the inner side of member 4, and also, for convenience of operation, joined to each other at their adjacent ends by a loose pivot or other connection.

10 are springs acting uponlatches S to cause them to engage the barbs 6 when the latter project into the holes '7.

11 is a cam,which may be turned by a suitable key, and when so turned acts upon latches 8 in opposition to springs 10 and causes the latches to release the barbs, when by bringing the arms to the dotted position in Fig. 3 the bag may be opened.

12 is the shank or stem of the cam 11, screwthreaded at its end, and 13 is a knob which may be screwed upon the end of the shank 12 and used to operate the cam. When the bag is locked, the knob may be unscrewed by turning itbackward and carried in the pocket, leaving, apparently, an ordinary key-hole, the knob thus constituting a very effective key.

When for any reason it is not desired to have the latches and other devices upon the inner side of the frame,I place them in a casing member (shown in'Fig. 5) and fasten it by rivets or otherwise upon the bag-frame, of which it then becomes a part.

What I claim is- 1. The combination, with the frame member 3 and the hooks 6 pivoted thereto, of the frame member 4, provided with openings 7 to receive the hooks, dogs 8, secured to frame member 4, and working across the openings 7, so as to engage the barbs of the hooks and prevent their withdrawal, and a cam arranged, substantially as shown, to actuate the dogs.

The combination, with the frame member 3 and the hooks 6 pivoted thereto, of the frame member 4, provided'with openings 7 to receive the hooks, pivoted dogs 8, having their free ends arranged to work across the openings 7 and engage the hooks when the frame members are closed one upon the other, and a cam 11, acting upon the connected inner ends of the dogs, all substantially as shown.

3. The combination, with the frame mem ber 3 and'the hooks pivoted thereto, of the frame member 4, adapted to receive the hooks, spring-actuated dogs 8,connected to the frame member 4 and adapted to engage the respective hooks when the two frame members are brought together, and a cam 11, arranged, substantially as shown, to retract the dogs and release the hooks.

4. In a traveling-bag, the combination, with the two frame members, of a locking mechanism comprising the hooks or arms, lockingdogs, and a cam for actuating the dogs, a stem for the cam provided with a threaded portion, and an operating-knob adapted to be screwed upon and unscrewed from the stem,

all substantially as shown.

5. The combination, substantially as set forth, of the two frame members, the arms pivotally connected to one of said members and provided with barbed ends adapted to enter recesses in the second member, and the dogs adapted to engage said barbed ends and lock the arms in holding position.

6. The combination, with the frame members 3 4 and mechanism substantially such as shown forlocking them together, of afalselock case applied to one of said members, and

a stem 12, through or by means of which the locking mechanism is operated, projecting IO through or into the false-lock case, as and for the purposeset forth.
