SAFETY ATTACHMENT FOR SATCHELS AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 19, 1918.
Application filed November 13, 1916. Serial No. 131,003.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAX WINKLER, a citizen of the United States, resident of Ridgewood, county of Queens, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Attachments for Satchels and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in satchels, hand-bags and the like, and particularly to the securing means as applied at their opening.
The principal object of the invention is to provide means operable through or by the handle whereby the two side frames may be positively bolted together or released by a simple movement, preventing unauthorized opemng.
A further object is to provide a device which may be applied without undue expense to articles of this type, which are readily operated, which effectually fulfil their purpose, and which present a neat and pleasing appearance.
These and other similar objects are attained by the novel design, construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a handbag showing the application of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through one of the frame sides.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a fragmental perspective view showing one of the attaching elements as applied to the frame side.
Fig. 5 is a fragmental perspectivevview showing the locking element as applied to the opposite frame side.
In the drawings, a bag 10 is shown having metallic frames 11 and 12, secured to the top by rivets 35 or like fastenings in such manner that the two parts may be hingedly engaged by the pins 14 as is common. An ordinary spring securing means 15, one of which is attached respectively to either side of the frame, may be used if desired.
To the outer frame 11 and upon its upper surface are rigidly engaged sleeves 17 through which passes a flexible handle 18, here shown to be comprised of a plurality of links in the manner of a chain, the same extending through the sleeves 17 and being engaged together by means of 'a pair of spaced rings 20, the same being normally positioned centrally of the handle and at its uppermost point so as to be grasped by the hand, as indicated in Fig. 1.
Within the frame 11, to its upper and lower elements, are secured rigid vertical plates 21, between which is slidably engaged a block 22 having a longitudinal opening or passageway 23 through which the chain may be drawn, similar but larger registering openings 24 being formed through the plates 21 so that the rings 20 may pass through the fixed plates and contact with the ends of the block 22, moving it in either direction.
A flat spring 25, affixed to the lower member of the frame 11, tends to hold the sliding block 22 in either of its adjusted positions. Extending outward from the outer side of the block 22 is a hook shaped bolt 26, adapted to enter an opening 27 formed in the other side frame 12 so that the bolt may be engaged or disengaged therewith.
When the bag is closed and the bolt entered through the mentioned opening, upon pulling the chain in one direction, the bolt 26 may be drawn into position to engage with the frame 12, holding the two frames against any possibility of separating or opening the bag, affording an effectual lock thereto.
When it is desired to open the bag, the chain is pulled in the opposite direction so as to cause the ring to move the bolt from the opening 27, allowing the frame sides to 7 separate.
Thus means are provided whereby the bolt and keeper elements may be united or separated by a simple motion and without the use of keys or other appliances whatever.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a hand-bag having a metallic frame at the opening thereof, of means for engaging said frame in a, positively locked position, and a continuous chain handle adapted to actuate said locking means.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a pair of hingedly engaged side frames, one of said frames having a slot, of a bolt engageable with the mentioned siot, and a chain adapted to be engageable in said slot; s'aid handle being 10, used as a handle for aotuatingsaid bolt into operatively engaged with said bolt, and
or out of engagement with the Slot. rings in"said '-handle for moving said bolt 3. In a device, ofthe classmde scribed, the longitudinally,v .1 or r a. combination with abag having a 'fpair of In testimony whereof I have afli xed my oppositely disposed, hingedly connected signatureithis second day of November, 1'5 7 frames," ofa flexible chain'hand'le attached 1916.
