PURSE AND BAG FASTENER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERIC H. BLEYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Purse and Bag Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to looks and fasteners for purses and bags and is adapted to prevent the opening of same by other parties than the owner or the accidental opening while in use.

The invention further possesses novel features inasmuch as no latch or fastening means is visible at the point where the actual locking takes place.

These and other features and details of the invention are more fully described in the fol lowin specification, set forth in the claims and illustrated in the drawings where it will be seen that the same reference characters are used to designate the same parts in the various views.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hand bag or purse partly in section. Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross section through the frame of the bag. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view through the handle.

This invention is applicable to any class of purse or bag employing a frame about its opening or a bolt or spring catch to fasten it but for convenience of illustration a lock employing a bolt is shown.

The frame 5 surrounding the opening of the bag is of the usual metallic construction being composed of the two members 6 and 7 pivoted or hinged at 8 and secured to the leather or cloth edges in any desired manner. The handle 9 may also be made of the same material as the bag and is hinged to one of the sections of the frame by means of a ferrule 10 with a flange 11 playing in a depression in the upper face of the member 7. Each end of the handle has one of these ferrules and within the material of which the handle is made is arranged a spring 12, adapted to not Specification bf Letters Patent.

end a ring or ball 14. The other end of this chain 14 enters the hollow member 7 of the frame 5 and is therein secured to one end of a bolt 1 5, normally pushed forward by a spring 16, so as to enter a hole in the hasp 17 carried by the member 6.

The ring or ball 14 is the only means by which the bolt 15 can 'be Withdrawn and as this ring is almost at all times in the hand of the owner it is obvious that any attempt to open the bag while the owner is ignorant of the attempt is impossible.

It is evident that this means for controlling the locking means for a purse need not be confined to a purse only as the cord or chain may be readily a plied to an ordinary catch or any similar ocking means. Various other modifications may be resorted to without departin from the essential features above described.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A receptacle of the class described having an opening, a frame comprising pivotally connected members about said opening to open and close said receptacle, a hollow handle connected to said frame, a bolt in one of the members of the frame to lock the members of the frame together when closed, and means to move the bolt to disengaging position, such bolt moving means passing through the said hollow handle.

2. In a lock for purses or bags, the combination with a frame com osed of cooperative parts and containing 100 ing means, of a hol ow handle, and means passing through the handle connecting with the lock and adapted to operate the locking means.

3. In a lock forpurses or bags, the combination with a frame composed of two parts, of a bolt in one of the parts, means for engaging the body in the other part, means for causing the engagement of the bolt, a hollow handle connected with one of the frame parts, and a cord or chain connected with the bolt and passing up and out of the handle to a point where its end may be grasped by the owner.
