Be it known that I, G. CORINNE DEsrAING, of Mount Vernon, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improved Attachment for Bag Fastenings, of which the following is a speciiication.

This invention relates to bagfastenings such as those used on ladies7 hand-bags,satchels, 8mo. It has for its object to prevent the bag from falling open should the fastening become detached, and thus act as a safeguard against pickpockefs, shop-lifters, and thieves, as will be hereinafter more fully explained.

'\ There are many kinds of fastenings in use which are very simple and effective, none of which, however, seem fully adapted to hold the bag -closed when thereis any internal pressure on the bag. Thus, when a ladys handbag becomes full of purchases or other matter, it will invariably become uufastened and fall wide open, leaving its contents within easy access to thieves, pickpockets, and that class of people, and in many cases tempt people to steal who under less tempting` circumstances would be perfectly honest.

My improved attachment is adapted to be attached to any kind of a bag, in addition to the fastening thereon. It is inexpensive to make, and is a perfect safeguard against the results enumerated above.

The accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, fully illustrate my improved attachment and its mode of operation.

Figure l of the drawings illustrates a side elevation of an ordinary hand-bag with my improved attachment secured thereto. Fig. 2 represents a top view of the same, showing the results my attachment would have when the bag-fastening becomes detached.

My improvement, as illustrated at a, Figs. 1 and 2, consists of a chain or any other suitable article, which may be secured at each 0, Fig. I.

end to the handle-studs o and o', and is adapted to be placed over the bag-fastening and held in position by means of a catch, as shown at In case the bag is provided with a fastening different from that illustrated in the drawings, I secure to the frame of the bag the catch c, as shown in Fig. l, and put the chain under the catch c when closing the bag. It will be thus seen that should a bag which is supplied with my improved attachment become unfastened the chain a will prevent it from falling wide open.

I preferably illustrate my attachment as being made of a chain, although it can be made of a cord, heavy elastic, or any other desirable article. It may, iu some cases, be preferable to have it made of a chain and elastic or spring combined, in order to give the attachment an elastic action.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. An attachment for bag-fastenings, consisting of a chain or other suitable material, having each end secured to the jaw or side of the bag-frame, as described, in combination with a catch secured to the opposite jaw or side of the frame, as described, and for the purpose specified.

2. An attachment for hand-bags, constructed as herein described, consisting of the chain a, secured to the studs o and o', and adapted to have its center portion placed under the catch c', all as described, specified, and for the purpose herein setV forth.
