FASTENING FOR HAND-BAG AND POCKET-BOOK FRAMES.
Z'JPECIl-"ECATIOZG forming part of Letters Patent No. 309,397, dated December 16,1884.
Application filed Srptimher17, 1954. (No model.)
To all ZU7LOIII/ it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN MEI-IL, Jr., of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, haveinvented anew and useful Improvement in Fastenings for Hand- Bag and Pocket-Book Frames, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hand-bag frame to which my improvement has been applied. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a part of the same. Figs. 3 and at show modifications of my improvement.
My invention relates to certain improve ments in that class of fastenings in which two balls mounted 011 opposite sides of the frame snap by each other when the frame is closed, and are held by friction and thcelastieity of the frame; and it consists in hinging or pivoting to one of said balls a bar that is adapted to engage the other ball and positively lock the two together, so that the frame will not open when dropped or after being used for a while, as is now the case with articles pro vided with such hall-fastenings.
A B are the bars of the frame, to the middle parts of which are attached stems O, having balls D formed upon or attached to them. The balls D are arranged in the usual manner for snap nng by each other when the frameis closed.
To one of the balls D is hinged abar, E, to engage with the other ball D and fasten the frame A B closed. The hinged bar E may be made in the form of a loop, as shown in Fig. 2, or in the form of a half loop or hook, as shown in Fig. 8, or in the form of a straight bar shutting down into a slot in the balls D, as shown in Fig. 4, the form of the bar being immaterial so long as it'is hinged to one of the said balls and engages with the other ball.
I am aware that frames have been provided on one side witha pivoted loop engaginga ball secured to the opposite side, and I do not claim such as of my invention.
Having thus described my invention. I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with the balls D, constructed to engage each other, as described, and connected with the parts A B of a handbag or pocket-book frame, of tnehar E, hinged to one of the said balls and engaging with the other ball, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the said frame can -be readily fastened and nnfastened, and will be held securely from becoming accidentally unfastened, as set forth.
JOHN MEHL, JR.
