UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
AUGUST GOERTZ, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
FASTENING FOR SATCHELS, 840.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 355,987, dated January 11, 1887.
Application filed September 2, 1885. Serial No. 175,957. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, AUGUST GOERTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State ofNew Jersey, have invented certain'new and useful Improvements in Purse, Satchel, and Bag Frames; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in catches for bags, satchels, &c., and is designed to provide a catch of simple and cheap con struction, and one that can be readily operated, said invention consisting of the device constructed and operating substantially as illustrated in the drawings, and claimed hereinafter.
Of the views shown in the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a bag or satchel frame to which my improved catch is attached. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the catch and a portion of the frame, showing a slight modification of construction. Fig. 3 is alongitudinal section of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the sliding bolt or catch, and Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the catch, 810.; and Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on the line :0 through Fig. 5, showing the engagement of the hasp with the bolt.
Similarreference-lettersindicate corresponding parts in each of the several views.
Ain the drawings, indicates the bag-frame, and B a box or casing which is riveted or secured to the frame at its central portion. The
casing consists of a base or main portion, a, from which rises a loop, a, through which a rod, 0, extends and moves longitudinally, and
is provided with a finger piece, 0, projecting up through a slot, a in the loop a.
As indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, the slot a in the loop is formed obliquely therein, inclining to the right or to the left, whereby a longitudinal movement is given to the rod 0 as it is turned by means of the finger-piece.
The bolt (Z, which in its operation is similar to that shown in a previous patent-,No. 310,413, and in common use, is arranged in the main portion a, and is provided with a projection, (1, preferably struck up from the metal of the bolt, as indicated in Fig. 4, which engages with a groove, 0', in the rod 0. A spring, e, returns the bolt to its normal looking or catching position.
From the construction above, described it will be apparent that by means of the obliquely-arranged slot in the loop the rotary movement of the finger-piece or rod 0 is converted into a longitudinal movement in said rod and the bolt (1, which thereby releases the haspf.
It will be understood that this catch is applicable to small purses or pouches as WelLas to satchels or bags.
Having described my invention, I desire to claim the following:
1. In a bag or purse catch, a casing having a slot formed obliquely therein,a rod arranged and movable in said casing, having a fingerpiece extending up through theslotin thesaid casing, and a sliding bolt engaging with and moved by the said sliding rod, for the purposes set forth.
2. In a bag or purse catch, in combination, a casing provided with a loop having a slot formed obliquely across the same, a sliding rod arranged and movable withim said loop, having a groove therein, and provided with a finger-piece extending up through the slot in the loop, and a bolt moving in the casing and provided with a projection engaging with the groove in the sliding rod, for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 10th day of August, 1885.
FREDK. F. CAMPBELL, OsoAR A. MIoHnL.
