PATENT OFFICE.
UllA RLES EIHVIN TURNER AND ROBERT LOFTON I'IYMAN, ()F MACON, GEORGIA; SAIL) IIYMAN ASSIGNOR TO SAIL) TURNER.
SATCHEL-FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 793,109, dated June .27, 1905.
Application filed August 31, 1904. Serial No. 222,899.
To whom, it III/(L-II/ ('UIMIVI'II/ Be it known that we, Ciunnns EDWIN TUR- Ni 1 and Ronuu'r Lorrox l'lYMAN, citizens of the United States. residing at Macon, in the county of Bihb and State of (ieorgia, have invented a new and useful Satchel-Fastening, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fastcnings for satchels, traveling-bags, and the like, and has for its object to provide improvements in this class of devices wherein projection of the latch member at the inner side of one of the jaws or frames at the mouth of the bag is obviated, thereby to prevent injury to the hands. &c., in packing and unpacking the satchel. It is furthermore designed to effect a quick locking and unlocking of the fastening and to effect a tight locking of the jaws of the bag. so as to obviate looseness thereof.
\Vith these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the novel combination and arrangemcntof parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings. Figure l is a perspective view of a pair of frame or jaw members of a satchel having the fastening means of the present invention applied thereto, the jaws being open to disclose both the latch and catch members. Fig. is an enlarged detail longitudinal sectional view of a satchel-fastenerofthe presentinvention. Fig. 3 is a crosssectional view thereof. Fig. is a detail plan view of the casing for containing the latch member. Fig. 5 isadetail view of the spring. Fig. 6 is a detail view of the slidable finger-piece with the latch connected thereto. Fig. 7 is a plan view of the fingerpiece. Fig. 8 is a detail sectional view similar to Fig. 3 and showing another arrangement of the latch.
Like characters of reference designatccorresponding parts in each and every figure of the drawings.
To illustrate the application and operation of the present invention, there have been shown in the drawings the hinged or pivotally-connectcd outer and inner jaw or frame members 1 and 2 for the mouth of a satchel or traveling-hag. As usual, each of these frames or jaws is in the nature of a metallic angle-bar, with the inner jaw 2 arranged to close within the flange of the outer jaw 1.
It will here be explained that the present invention is applicable to the key-actuated locks as well as to the slidable and hand-operated catches usually employed in addition to and at opposite sides of the lock, and a description of the hand-operated catch will first be given.
In carrying out the present invention the outer jaw member is provided with a longitudinal slot 3. and a casing & is secured to the exterior of the jaw, so as to inclosc the slot or opening The back or outer side of the casing is provided with a longitudinal keyhole-slot 5, with another guide-slot G disposed in substantial parallelism therewith. Upon the back of this casing is a slidable fingerpiece 7 in the form of a hollow casing or button, from the back of which projects the stem 8 of the latch, which is movable with the finger-piece and works in the slot of the casing and the slot 3 of the jaw or frame 1. As best indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, it will be noted that the stem of the latch S terminates short of the outer edge of the flange of the member 1, thereby to avoid a projection at the inner side of the jaw, and the outer extremity of the latch member is provided with a rounded or spherical head 9 to obviate injury to the hands, &c., upon contact therewith. \\"'ithin the casing is a bowed leafspring 10, having a keyhole-slot 11 arranged reversely to the keyhole-slot 5 of the casing, with the stem of the latch working therein and provided with an annular shoulder 12 at the front side of the spring, so as to bear against the convex face thereof and draw the finger-piece 7 into frictional contact with the with its latch 8, are assembled prior to applying the device to the jaw of the bag, the latch member being first introduced through the enlarged end of the slot 5, said enlarged end being of a size to also permit of the passage therethrough of the flared shoulder 12, after which the latch-stem is moved to the opposite end of the slot 5 and then thrust through the enlarged end of the slot 11 in the spring 10. The shoulder 12 of the latch is of greater diameter than the width of the slots 5 and 11, and the latter are reversely arranged with respect to their enlarged ends, so as to prevent accidental outward displacement of the latch and its finger-piece 7. The finger-piece 7 is connected to the casing 4 through the medium of the latch 8 only, while the casing 1 is rigidly connected to the frame or jaw member 1 in any suitable 1nanner---as, for instance, by means of terminal lugs or projections 13 passed through openings 14 in the jaw 1 and then bent or upset against the inner face of said jaw. The linger-piece 7 is provided with a projection 7 to work in the guide-slot 6 of the casing 4:, so as to prevent rotation of the linger piece and to direct the same in a straight line during its slidable movements.
For cooperation with the latch member a catch or keeper member 15 in the nature of a box or casing is rigidly secured upon the inner side of the innerjaw member2 and is provided with a keyhole-slot 16 of a size to receive the outer end of the latch member 8, and thereby lock the two jaw or frame members 1 and 2.
It is of course proposed to employ two fastening devices of the character described, one at each side of the key-actuated lock 17, and it is also proposed to provide said lock with a pair of latch members 8, having terminal spherical heads or enlargements 9" similar to the latches hereinbefore described, the catch or keeper 15 being similar to the catch or keeper 15 and provided with a pair of keyhole-slots 16 for the reception of the respective catches 8.
Instead of mounting the slidable latch upon one side'of the jaw 1 it may be mounted upon the top of the jaw, as indicated in Fig. 8, wherein is shown an outer jaw l and an inner jaw 2, with a casing L mounted upon the top of the jaw 1 and having the slidable lingerpiece 7, which carries the stem of the latch 8, the latter working in a longitudinal slot 3, formed in the top of the frame and having its outer portion exposed at substantially right angles to the inner portion of the stem, so as to permit of its headed end 9 engaging with the keeper 15, secured to the inner jaw 2, as herein described, and provided with a keyhole-slot 16 for the reception of the headed end of the latch member. It will here be explained that when the latch is mounted upon the top of the jaw 1 and is provided with an L-shaped latch-stem there should be space enough between the flange 2 of the inner jaw and the back of the outer jaw to accommodate the stem, thereby to obviate the necessity of forming an edge notch in the flange 2. In each instance it will be noted that the catch or keeper and the latch member terminate short of the flanges of the respective jaw members, thereby to avoid projections when the satchel is open, while at the same time these members are disposed so as to quickly and effectuallyinterchange when the jaw members are closed and the latches operated to enter the enlarged end of the slot of the catch or keeper and then moved into the opposite end portion of the slot, the head of the catch serving to prevent separation of the members.
Having fully described the invention, what is claimed is 1. A fastening of the class described comprising a casing having a slot in the back thereof, a finger-piece slidable upon the back of the casing, a latch carried by the finger-piece and projected inwardly through the slot and at the opposite side of the casing, said latch having an intermediate shoulder, a bowed spring titted within the casing and provided with a slot receiving the latch, the shoulder of the latch working over the convex face of the spring, and a keeper to receive the projected end of the latch.
52. A fastening of the class described comprising a casing having a pair of substantially parallel slots in the back thereof, a fingerpiece slidable upon the back of the casing and provided with a guide projection working in one of the slots, a latch member carried by the finger-piece and working in the other slot and also projected at the opposite side of the casing, and a keeper for the projected end of the latch.
3. A fastening of the class described comprisinga casing having a keyhole-slot, a bowed spring within the casing and provided with a keyhole-slot alined with the slot of the casing and disposed reversely thereto, a finger-piece slidable upon the back of the casing, a latch carried by the finger-piece and working in the slots of the casing and the spring, the latch having an outer terminal head and an intermediate shoulder insertible and removable through the enlarged ends of the slots, the shoulder working across the convex face of the spring, and 'a keeper to receive the headed end of the latch.
In testimony that We claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures in the prseence of two witnesses.
