BENJAMIN F. HILLERY, OF NEV YORK, N.
FASTENING FOR BOXES, SATCHELS, 80C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 336,316, dated February 16, 1886.
Application filed November 24, 1855.
T 0 all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. HILLERY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fastenings for Satchels, Boxes, &c., of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a very simple and cheaply-constructed fastener, adapted to close at either one or both sides of the latchcasing, and thus adapted for use on boxes, pocket-books, satchels, &c.
The improvement will be hereinafter fur ther described and specifically pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents, in a perspective view, my improved fastener attached to a box and latched at one side only in the casing. Fig. 2 represents the same in an end view showing how it may be used to latch on both sides of the case for locking simultaneously two separate compartments, as in a pocket-book or satchel. Fig. 3 shows a longitudinal section on the line as x of Fig. 2 of the latch-casing, and, at opposite sides of the same, the hooks or catches of the opposite compartments ready to enter the casing and engage the latch. Fig. 4 shows, in longitudinal section through thelineyy ofFig.2 and separated in details, the casing, the latch-spring, and the bottom plate of the casing. Fig. 5 is a detail view showing the blanks from which the casing and latch are made.
The main parts of the clasp-lock are the casing A, the latch B, and the catch 0.
D is the bottom plate of the casing and upon which the latch B rests while being slid in the casing, and also serves the purpose of securing the casing to the box or article on which it is to be used, the casing A being secured to the plate D by projections a inserted through holes d and clinched in the usual manner of similar devices.
The casing A is pressed by dies from a blank from about the shape shown in Fig. 5 into the shape shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the perforations a a and the end notch, a appearing in the respective places shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and the end a being cup-shaped and bent up, so as to form a knob or button to be touched by the finger.
Serial No. 183,853. (No model) The latch B is formed in dies from the blank shown in Fig. 5, the flaps I) being bent down at opposite sides, so as to form a space between them for the catch es or hooks O to enter, the end I) being turned up and cup-shaped to form a button, similar to a, and a prong, 1)", serving the purpose of supporting a spiral spring, 0.
To put the parts together the spring 0 is placed upon the prong b of the latch B. latter is then inserted into the casing A with the prong If projecting through the holes a and the shank of the button I) in the notch a. \Vhen in this position, as in Fig. 3, the latch B will be pressed outward in the direction of the handle I) and the end wall, 6, (see Fig. 4,) the case A serving as a stop against the portion f of the latch, to check further outward movement, and the edge 8 of the flap b at the slot b will be in position about midway or farther from the slot to of the casing, so that when the catch 0 is pressed through the slots a and b in closing the incline thereof will strike the edge 8 and push the button b back against the pressure of the spring 0 until the said edge reaches the notch of the catch and enters it by the pressure of the spring, thus locking the catch to the latch and easing.
\Vhen the latch is intended to close at both sides, of course the opening in the latch B, between its two flaps, I), must be at least as wide as the combined depth of the hooks 0, when these are directly opposite to each other; but to prevent increasing the said width the hooks and the slots through which they enter may be placed obliquely opposite to each other, as shown in Fig. 3.
It is evident that by this construction the casing A and latch 13 may be used to lock either on one or both sides without necessitating any change in its size or shape.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a fastener for Satchels, boxes, &c., the combination with the casing A, having side slot, a, the latch B, having pressure-button b and lock-edge 8, adapted to slide within the saidcasing A, and the end spring, 0, interposed between the said latch and casing, of the catch 0, substantially as hereinbefore set forth.
2. In a fastenerfor Satchels, boxes, 850., the
The i combination of the casing A, having side slot, (1, guidehole a and end button, a, the latch B, having pressure-button b, lock-edge s, and prong b and fitted to slide Within the said casing A with the said prong through the said guide-hole, the end spring, 0, interposed upon the said prong between the said latch and casing, and the catch 0, substantially as hereinbefore set forth.
8. In a fastener for Satchels, boxes, &c., the combination of the casing A, having at opposite sides slots a, the latch B, having opposite fiaps,b,and through the said flaps slots 1), corresponding to the slots a of the casing, an
