Be it known that I, Josnrir S. Isroon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which .it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The present invention has reference, generally, to improvements in holding or looking catches for bags, traveling-cases, suitcases, and similar articles.

The present invention has for its primary objectto provide a simple and neat construction of holding or locking catch for bagframes, and the like, which is of a strong and durable construction, securely retains the frame-sections of the bag, or similar article, in their closed relation to each other, and is readily and easily manipulated when it is desired to release the frame-sections of the bag, or similar article, from their closed and locked relation to each other.

The invention has for its further object to provide a novel holding or looking catch which when manipulated to cause the same to assume its released or unlocked relation to the bagframes, or similar articles, to which it may be attached, remains in that released or unlocked relation as long as the bag or similar article is open, but automatically resumes its locking relation thereto as soon as the bag or simllar article 1s closed.

Other objects of the present invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of my present invention.

The invention is clearly illustrated in accompanying d 'awings, in which Figure 1 is a detail perspective view of a portion of a bag and frame-sections, the same being provided with the novel holding or looking catch embodying the principles of my present invention. Fig. 2 is a detail longitudinal vertical section of said holding or locking-catch, the same being illustrated in its locking relation with said frame-sections. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section, taken on line 33 in said Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section, similar to that shown in Fig. 3, the said holding or looking catch, however being illustrated in its unlocked relation with said frame-sections. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section taken just below the bolt-carrier and illustrating said holding or locking catch in its unlocked relation with said frame-sections, but said frame-sections being about to be closed and the said holding or locking catch being about to reassume its locking relation. Fig. 6 is a horizontal section taken on line 66 in said Fig. 2, looking downwardly.

Similar characters of reference are e1nployed in all of the said herein-above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.

Referring now to the said drawings, the reference-character 1 indicates the body portion of a bag or similar article, provided with an overlap fra1ne-section 2 and an underlap frame-section 3, the said frameseotions 2 and being adapted to be hinged together in the manner usual to bag-frame sections. 2 and 3 may be further provided with a leather or similar covering t, if desired. The said overlap frame-section 2 is provided with a suitably disposed elongated opening or cutout portion 5, and suitably arranged, so as to register properly above the said opening or cut-out portion 5, is a holding or looking catch-casing (3, the same being held or secured in its proper position by means of downwardly extending tongues or lugs 7 which preferably form an integral partof the ends of said casing 6 and extend downwardly from the peripheral edge of said ends. The said tongues or lugs 7 pass through suitable openings with which said overlap frame-section 2 is provided and the ends thereof are turned over against the under side of said frame-section 2 to form the anchor-portions or fastening lugs 8. The said casing 6 is further provided with a bottom-plate 9 secured thereto in any suit able manner. The said bottom-plate 9 is provided with asuitably disposed opening or cut out portion 10 adapted to register above the opening or cut out portion 5 of frame-section 2, and the periphery of sa d opening or cut out portion 10, on the side toward the outer edge of said overlap frame-section 2, is provided with a shoulder or projecting portion 11. ()ne end of said casing G is further provided with a suitable opening or slot 12, said casing 6 forming a chamber 13. Slidably arranged upon said bottom plate 9 and within said chamber 13 is'a bolt-carrier or plate 14, said bolt-carrier or plate being provided with a fingerpiece or tongue 15 which is bent up from one end thereof, so as to extend upon a plane somewhat higher than the plane of said boltcarrier or plate let. The said fingerpiece or tongue normally projects through and beyond the opening or slot 12 in the end of said casing 6. Struck out of said bolt-carrier or plate 1st is a boltportion or post 16 which extends downwardly from said plate and preferably at right angles thereto. The said bolt-portion or post 16 further-- mor projects downwardly through said opening or cut-out portion 10 of said bottomplate 9 and through the opening or cut out portion 5, of said frame-section 2. Extending upwardly from the inner end of said bolt-carrier or plate 14 is post 17 to which is secured one end of a suitable spring 18, the other end of which is anchored or secured upon a hook-portion 19 secured to, and prefcrably struck up out of said bottom-plate 9. lVhile the said bolt-carrier or plate 1a is capable of longitudinally sliding movement, the action of the said spring 18 also produces a laterally slidable or rotary movement of said plate, whereby the plate is held in the position, indicated in lfi lgl et of the drawings, so that the said bolt-- portion 16 is maintained in its locking position, and said fingerpiece or tongue 15 in its outwardly projecting relation to the opening or slot 12 ofsaid casing 6. Secured bv means of rivets 20, or in any other suitable inanner. to said under-lap frame-section 3 is a hasp plate or lock-nosing 21, the same being proylded with an extension 22 and with a locking or holding portion 23 which is provided w1th a notch or cut away portion 24 adapted to receive and engage with said bolt-portion 16 when the same is in its locking position. To free the two framesections from their relatively locked positions, a slight inward push or pressure is exerted upon the fingerpiece or tongue 15 which moves the boltcarrier or plate 14 forward within said chamber 13 against the tension of said spring 18. The pull of said spring 18, owing to its position with relation to said bolt-carrier or plate 14-, is slightly diagonal, thereby creating a tendency of the bolt-portion 16 to follow the periphery of said opening or cut out portion 10 of said bottom-plate 9 which is provided with the shoulder or projecting portion 11; and, which, when the said boltportion 16 carried by said bolt-carrier or plate l l passes the same engages and holds said bolt-portion 16 in its unlocked relation with the notch or cut away portion 2st of said locking-portion 23 of the hasp-plate 21, from which ithas just been moved away from its operative relation therewith when said bolt-carrier or plate ll was operated. its long as the bag frame-

2 and 3 are separated or open, the parts of the lock ing device are retained in their unlocked or non-locking relation, but when said bagframc-sections are again moved toward each other, to cause the same to assume their closed relation one with the other, the eX- tensionmrtion 22 of said hasp-plate 21 is brought in contact with said bolt-portion 16, as shown more particularly in Fig. 5 of the drawings, and thereby said bolt-portion 16 is forced away from its restrained contact with the shoulder or projecting portion 11, so that the spring 18 may act upon said boltcarrier or plate 14: to pull the same to its normal initial position. Consequently the said bolt-portion 16 is again brought into its operative locking relation and engagement with the notch or cut-away portion 21 of the locking-portion 23 of said hasp-plate 21, as will be clearly evident.

It will thus be clearly seen, that the present invention provides a very etlicient and exceedingly simple holding or locking catch for bags or similar articles, the same being constructed of a minimum number of parts, and reduced to the simplest operative efiiciency.

I am aware that some changes may be made in the several arrangen'ients and combinations of the various parts, as well as in the details of the construction thereof, without departing from the scope of my present invention as defined in the appended claims. Hence, I do not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the parts as herein shown and described, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction thereof.

I claim 1. In a holding or locking catch for bags and similar articles, the combination with a casing, of a bolt-carrier having a fingerpiece extending from one end of said casing, said carrier having a slidable movement longitudinally within said casing, and also a laterally rotatable movement therein, a bolt- .said casing for retaining said bolt-portion portion connected therewith, means within l in its unlocked relation with a hasp-plate, and means for automatically returning said bolt-portion to its locked relation with the hasp-plate when the bag or similar article is closed, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. In a holding or locking catch for bags and similar articles, the combination with a casing, of a bolt-carrier having a fingerpiece extending from one end of the casing, said carrier having a longitudinally slidable and a laterally rotatable movement within said casing, a downwardly extending bolt-portion integrally connected with said bolt-carrier, means within said casing for retaining said bolt-portion in its unlocked relation with a hasp-plate, and means for automatically returning said bolt-portion to its locked relation with the hasp-plate when the bag or similar article is closed, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

In a holding or looking catch for bags and similar articles, the combination with a casing provided at one end with an elongated opening, of a bottom-plate, said plate being provided with a cut out portion, a bolt-carrier slidably arranged within said casing, finger-piece connected therewith and adapted to project through and beyond saitl elongated opening of said casing, a downwardly extending bolt portion integrally connected with said bolt-carrier, a spring in engagement with and adapted to retain said bolt-carrier and said bolt-portion normally in locked relation with a haspplate, means connected with said bottomplate for retaining said bolt-portion in its unlocked relation with said hasp-plate, and means for automatically returning said boltportion to its locked relation with said haspplate when the bag or similar article is closed, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

4. In a holding or looking catch for bags and similar articles, the combination with a casing provided at one end with an elongated opening, of a bottom-plate, said plate being l provided with a cut out portion, a bolt-carrier slidably arranged within said casing, a finger-piece connected therewith and adapted to project through and beyond said elongated opening of said casing,adownwardly extending bolt-portion integrally connected With said bolt-carrier, a spring in engagement with and adapted to retain said bolt carrier and said bolt-portion normally in locked relation with a hasp-plate, means connected with said bottom-plate for retaining said bolt-portion in its unlocked relation with said hasp-plate, comprising a project.- ing portion in the peripheral edge of the cut out portion of said bottom-plate adapted to engage said bolt-portion, and means for antomatically returning said bolt-portion to its locked relation with said hasp-plato when the bag or similar article is closed, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

5. In a holding or looking catch for bags and similar articles, the combination with a casing provided at. one end with an elongated opening, of a bottom-plate, said plate being provided with a cut-out portion, a bolt-carrier slidably arranged within said casing, a finger-piece connected therewith and adapted to project through and beyond said elongated opening of said casing, a downwardly extending bolt-portion integrally connected with said bolt-carrier, a spring in engagement with and adapted to retain said bolt-carrier and said bolt-portion normally in locked relation with a haspplate, means connected with said bottomplate for retaining said bolt-portion in its unlocked relation with said hasp-plate, comprising a projecting portion in the periph eral edge of the cut out portion of said bottom-plate adapted to engage said bolt-portion, and means for automatically returning said bolt-portion to its locked relation with said hasp-plate, when the bag or similar article is closed, comprising an extension connected with said hasp-plate adapted to engage said bolt-portion and release it from engagement with said projecting-portion in the peripheral edge of said cut-out portion of said bottom-plate, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
