Speeicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 2?, 1915.
Application flied January 7, 1915. serial No. ses.
To all wlw/m, tt may concern."
-le it known that I, 'Juntos HAMMEsFAI-IR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Fasteners; and l dol hereby declare theA following to be-a full, clear, and exact description; of the invention, such as will enableothersskilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and use the same, .reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters ofreference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The present invention has reference, generally, to improvements in bag-fasteners or catches which are ordinarily employed with the hinged frame-sections of bags, suitcases, andthe like; and, the invention relates, more` particularly, to that class of bagframe fasteners comprising a main-shell, a slidable bolt element, and releasablemeans for locking said bolt element in its engaged or holding relation to the catch elements of the opposite frame-section. n l
The present invention has forits principal object to provide a bag-frame fastener com-r prising a chambered shell'or casing and a slidable bolt-carrying operating plate movably related to said chambered shell or casing, a spring locking'means for retaining the bolt, carried by said Abolt-carrying operating plate, in its engaged orlocking relation to the catch elements of the opposite.
tion to saidy catch elements of the oppositer frame-section, when released from the retaining .action of said spring locking means. The invention has for its further object to provide a bag-frame fastener of the general character hereinafter more particularly set forth, with a view of providing a bagframe fastener vof neat and simple appearance, and one which may be quickly and easily broughtinto its locking or unlocked relation by exceedingly simple manipulations. f
Other objects of the present invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will he clearly evident from the following detailed description of the invention.
With the various objects of the invention in view, the said invention consists, primarbody upon and in which the operative parts of which will be more fully described in the" following specification, and then finally'em-A bodied in the clauses of the claims which are appended to and which form an essential part of this specification.
The invention isl clearly illustrated accompanying drawings, in which Figure l V's a Aplan view of one end of-a bag-frame in closed position, and equipped with the novel bag-frame fastener made accordingto and embodying the principles of` my present invention.y Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. v Fig. 3 is a detail vertical longitudinal section of the sa-me, drawn on an enlarged scale, and illustrating the novel bag-frame fastener in its locking or fastening position. Fig. tis a detail view simii lar to that shown riii-Fig. 3,but.i llustrating the novel bag-frame fastener in its unlocked or unfastened position. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section of the novel bag-frame fastener, taken on line 5 5 in said Fig. 3, looking downward. Fig. 6 is a bottom view of. said in the novel bag-frame fastener removed from its, l
Similar characters of reference are vemployed inthe said .above-described views to ,Y
Aindicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the said drawings, the reference character 1 indicates one frame# section of bag-frame, or the like, and thereference character 2 indicates the opposite Vframe-section.
The 'reference character .3 indicates top-wall, 4 the longitudinally extending side-members or walls, and 5 the laterally extending end-members or walls of the main shell or casing of the bag-frame fastener, the same providing a suitablyk chambered of the fastener mechanism are supported. The reference character 6 indicates an exterior slidable bolt-carrying plate which is said chambered body. Connected with said bolt-carrying plate 6 is a downwardly and slidablysupported upon the top-wall 3 of. Y
vertically extending bolt-element 7, the same being secured to said bolt-carrying plate 6 by means of suitable rivet-portions 8, or any other equivalent or suitable fastening means. The said top-wall 3 of said chambered body is provided with a suitably disposed longitudinally extending slot 9, through which said bolt-element 7 extends so as to pass downwardly through the interior of said chambered body, said slot 9 being of suiiicient length to permit the necessary longitudinal movement of said bolt-element relative to said chambered-body. In order to retain said bolt-carrying plate 6 and its boltelement 7 in proper relation to said chambered bodyy there is provided a keeper-plate 10 which registers against the inner or under side of said top-wall 3 of said chambered body, said keeper-plate 10 having a slot through which said bolt-element extends for the purpose of assembling the said parts, and said bolt-element being further provided witlrretaining or stop-lugs 11 overlapping saidl keeper-plate and servingto retain the same against removal from its proper associated relation to said bolt-element. The lower free end ofsaid bolt-element provides a--holdingportion 12 which may be moved into engagement with hook-like catch elements 13 which extend from and are secured to the frame-section 2, in the usual and welllrnown manner. Connected with said boltelement 7 and spaced slightly away from said holding-portion 12 thereof is a catchnosing 14:, the purpose of which will presently appear. Inserted in the lower open portion ofsaid chambered body is a bottomplate 15, the same being provided with an elongated longitudinally extending slot 16 through which said holding-portion 12 of said bolt-element 7 projects.
The reference character 17 indicates a spring lock-plate, the same being bifurcated at one end to provide the arms 18 which straddle said holding-portion 12 of said bolt-element 7. Said arms 18 are se cured by the rivets 19 or any other suitable fastening devices, to the said bottom plate 15, so as to anchor said spring lock-plate 17 in proper fixed location withinv said chambered body. Said spring lock-plate 17 inclines upwardly within said chambered body and extends beneath said catch-nosing 14 of said bolt-element, said spring-lock plate 17 being provided with a properly located receiving opening 20 into which said catchnosing 14 is received or projects with lockingetfect when said bolt-element 7'V is moved to register said catch-nosing 111 with said receiving opening 20, thereby locking said bolt-element in an immovable position until said spring lock-plate 17 is depressed to release said catch-nosing 14. Said catch-nosing 14 is further provided with a chamfered or rounded edge portion 21 which serves to automatically depress said spring loclrplate, when moving said bolt-element into position to register its catch-nosing 14 with the receiving-opening 20. rihe free end of said spring lock-plate 17 is provided with a neck-piece or tongue 22 which passes through an `opening 23 in an end-member or wall 5 of said chambered body, to exteriorly present said neck-piece or tongue without said chambered body. A. suitable knob or finger-piece 211- is secured to the exterior end of said neck-piece or tongue, and the same serves as a means for depressing said spring lock-plate to release the-same from holding engagement with said catch-nosing of said bolt-element.
Secured to the inte 1ior side of the opposite end-member or wall 5 of said chambered body is an anchor-plate 25 out of which is pressed, or with which is connected in any other suitable manner, a hook-like member 26 which serves to engage and anchor one end of a pull-spring 27, the opposite end of which is secured operatively to said bolt-element 7 by engaging the same with a similar hook-like member 28 pressed out of or otherwise connected with said keeper plate 10. Said bag-frame fastener' thus constructed is secured to said framesection 1 by means of fastening lugs or prongs 29, which project from the chambered body and pass through openings in said frame sect-ion suitably located for that purpose, the lugs or prongs being then turned over against the frame-section to prevent their withdrawal. Of course any other desirable means of securing the bagframe fastener to the frame-section may be employed, without departing from the scope of this invention. Said frame-section 1 is further provided with a slot 30 registered with the slot 16 of said bottom plate 15, through which the holding-portion 12 of the bolt-element projects so as to be capable of being moved into and out of engagement with said catch-elements 13 of the opposite frame-section 2.
Referring now to Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, the novel bag-frame fastener above described is shown operated to position the holdin g-portion 12 of its bolt-element 7 in its fastening relation to the catch-elements 13. Said bolt-element is retained in such fastening relation by means of the spring lockplate 17 the receiving opening 2O of which. embraces said catch-ncsing 14 and prevents the sliding movement of said bolt-element whereby its holding portion is carried away from said catch-element 1.3. It will thus be apparent that the bag-frame fastener is locked in fastening relation against accidental displacement from such relation, yet it is exceedingly easy to release the same from such fastening relation by simply pressing downwardly upon the finger-piece 24C whereby said spring lock-plate 17 is depressed so that its receiving opening 2O is carried away` from said catch-nosing 14, thus releasing. said bolt-element 7 to `the `pulling influence `of said pull-spring 27, which thereupon automatically slides said bolt-element and bolt-carrying plate longitudinally thereby carrying said holding portion 12 away fromfits engagement with said catch-element 13', the parts then assuming the positions illustrated in Fig. l of the drawings. When it is desired to lock said fastener, the carrying-plate is pushed back to normal position, thereby reversing the sliding movement of said bolt-element and carrying its holding-portion 12 "again into engagement with said catch-elements 13, at the same time the chamfered or rounded edge-portion 21 of said catch-nosing rides against said spring lock-plate 17 automatically depressing the same until the receiving opening 20 of the latter registers with said catch-nosing whereupon the spring lock-plate 17 resumes normal position with said catch-nosing projecting into said receiving opening 20, and the bolt-element 7 being thereby again locked against release until said spring lock-plate 17 is again depressed by the manipulation of its n finger-piece.
Of course, l am fully aware that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, as well as in the-details of the construction of thesaid parts, without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification and as defined in the claims which Vare appended to the said specification. Hence, I do not limit myself to the exact arrangements and combinations of the several parts as described inthe said specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
