SATCHEL-CLASP.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,174, dated April 6, 1880. Application filed September 3, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I. ABRAHAM KAUFMANN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Satchel-Clasps, of which the following is a specification.

In the accompanyingdrawings, Figure 1 represents a front view, and Fig. 2 a vertical transverse section on line as :0, Fig. 1, of my improved satchel-clasp.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to improvements in clasps for pocket-books, Satchels, travelingbags, &c., for which Letters Patent have been granted heretofore to Simon F. Clement, under date of March 20, 1877, and numbered 188,589; and the invention consists of a face-plate and base-plate attached to the flap of the satchel or pocket-book, the face-plate having a raised guide socket or case, by which and the baseplate a slide-rod or strap is guided, having a fixed interior end piece. The rod is extended through a hole in the lower end plate of the socket and provided at the outer end with a T-shaped catch and a knob or handle which project at right angles from the slide-rod. A spiral spring is interposed between the end piece of the slide-rod and the end plate of the guide socket or case. The catch engages a keeper with a raised slotted socket that serves for looking or releasing the catch.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the face-plate, and B the base-plate, of my improved clasp for pocket-books, satchels, &c. The face-plate A is stamped or otherwise provided with a raised socket, to, preferably of semicircular crosssection, said socket being closed at both ends, the lower end plate, I), being in line with the lower edge of the faceplate and at right angles to the same. The face and base plates are riveted to the flap of the satchel or pocketbook, they forming together the guide case for the slide-rod or strap 0.

The rod 0 is guided in the socket or case formed by the face and back plates, A B, by a fixed end piece, 0, of the same cross-section as the case, and it is extended through a hole of the lower end plate, I), of the same, said hole serving, in connection with the guide-case, for steadily holding and guiding the slide-rod or strap 0 in partly or entirely drawn-out position.

From the outer end of rod 0 projects in an upward direction. and at right angles to the same, a knob or handle, (I, and in a downward direction a T-shaped catch, (1.

A spiral spring, 6, is placed around the rod 0, between the fixed end piece, O, of the rod and the end plate, I), of the case, which spring is compressed when the slide-rod is drawn out by pulling the handle. On releasing the handle the spring returns the slide-rod instantly up to the handle, which acts as a stop.

To the body of the satchel or pocket-book is attached a keeper, D, the raised middle or socket portion of which has a T-shaped slot, (1 into which the catch (1 of the rod 0 is readily introduced, it being drawn up by the spring of the slide-rod into the narrower part of the slot.

When the satchel or pocket-book is to be closed the slide-rod is drawn out of the face and base plates by pulling at the handle. The catch is then inserted into the slotted keeper, and finally locked to the same by letting the handle go. The clasp is opened by drawing the slide-rod down into the slot of the keeper until the enlarged lower portion of the slot admits the exit of the catch, the slide-rod being then drawn back into the handle by the action of the spring.

In this manneraconveniently-operated clasp for pocket-books and a superior metallic spring strap or clasp for satchels is obtained. The rubber straps or hinged clasps at present in use may be dispensed with, and a more durable and reliable fastening for pocket-books, satchels, and traveling-bags thus furnished in their place.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination of faceplate A, having a raised guide-socket, a b, and of base-plate B, both adapted to be secured to the flap of the satchel or pocket-book, with a spring-acted slide-rod or strap, 0, that is guided by an interior end piece, 0, in the socket to, and exsocket up to the tended through a hole in the end plate, Z), of i the socket to the outside, said slide-rod having a handle and catch at the outer end, substantially as set forth.

2. A face-plate, A, and base-plate B, the former having a raised guide-socket, a, in combination with a guided and spring-acted sliderod or strap, 0, that is extended through the end plate of the guide-socket and provided with a projecting handle and catch at the outer end, and with a keeper, D, having a raised and slotted socket for the entrance and retention of the catch, substantially as described.
