Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM ROEMEB, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN CATCH-PLATES FOR BAG-LOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,939, dated J une 29, 1875; application filed May 20, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM RoEMER, of Newark, Essex county, New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved FrontOatch-Plate for Bag-Locks, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a face view, Fig. 2 a top yiew, and Fig. 3 a vertical cross-section, of my improved front catch-plate for bag-locks.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre-l spondin g parts in all the figures.
This invention has for its object to make the plate which carries the catch of a lock for traveling-bags, satchels, &c., in one piece with the eye or handle, by which the bag-frame can be drawn open.
Heretofore a hinged link or ring, or a leather strap for drawing the bag-frame open, was attached to the body of the bag or to the frame thereof.
I make the plate which carries the lockcatch in one plate with said handle or eye, by bending the lower middle part of said plate outward, and perforating it.
In the drawing, the letter A represents the metal plate, to which the catch a of the lock of a traveling-bag, satchel, or similar article, is rigidly secured. This plate is to be fastened by pins or rivets to the frame of such bag or satchel, the catch projecting inwardly so it will enter the lock whenever the bag or satchel is closed, and aid in holding the same closed. The ends of the plate A are formed into perforated vertical lips b 12, through which the fastening rivets or'pins are passed. The lower part (I of the plate A, between the lips 1), extends outward, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, so it will project some distance from the body of the bag and constitute a convenient handle, by which the bag can be drawn open when unlocked.
For greater ease of grasping the handle part (1 I perforate it, as shown; but said handle part may be made of other form than that shown, and not perforated.
I claim as my invention- A catc11-plate for bag-locks consisting of the plate A, catch a, perforated lips I) b, and bent handle (I, made in one piece of metal, substantially as described.
Theforegoing description of my invention signed by me this 11th day of May,-1875.
WILLIAM ROEMER.
