SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 571,159, dated November 10, 1896.

Application filed December 18, 1895- Be it known that I, AUGUST GOERTZ, a citi- Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Frame Catches, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in bags, such as, for example, chatelaine-bags,

The object of my invention is to provide a construction, strong and durable, holds the bag securely closed even when the bag is filled to its utmost capacity, and which catch can'easily be opened by the use one hand The invention consists in the constructionand combination of parts and details, as will be fully described and set forth hereinafter,

In the accompanying drawings, forming a letters of reference indicate like parts in all the views, Figure 1 is a side view of a bag- Fig. 2 is an interior view of one frame-section, Fig. 3 is a view of the under side of said frame at the recess. The U-shaped flanged frame-sections A and B are pivoted to each other at their ends by the rivets C, the frame B being adapted to close within the frame A in the usual The flange A of the outer frame-section A is provided at the center of said section with the recess a, and the recessed part of the flange is reinforced by a metal fitting D, held by rivets on the top of the flange and having bosses, whichrecess b registers with the recess a.

is recessed and folded on the under side of the flange A and held a short distance from the same and slightly inclined from the outer edge of the flange inward.

The recess in the lip E is provided at its inner end with the two side pockets F.

A L-shaped clip G is riveted to the outer side of the frame-section B in such a manner that the upper rectangular shank is some distance above the flange B of the frame-section B and extends over the same, as shown in Fig. 5.

A hollow head H is fastened to said rectangular shank, and in the same a bolt J is guided to slide up and down, which bolt is pressed upward by a spring K, surrounding it within the head.

A knob L is formed on the upper end of the bolt and projects through an aperture in the top of the head H, in which aperture it is guided.

The bolt J has shoulders J at its lower end to limit its upward movement, and below said shoulders it has opposite side lugs M ,provided with bevels N on their upper edges.'

, The operation is as follows: When the frame-section B is folded against and into the frame-section A, the bevels N of the lugs M strike the beveled lip E, and thereby the bolt J is pulled downward until the lugs M arrive at the pockets F in the sides of the recess in the lip E, when the bolt J snaps upward under the action of the spring K, the lugs M passing into said pockets, whereby the two frame-sections are locked securely together. To open the bag or satchel, the knob L, proj ecting from the top of the head H, is pressed downward, whereby the lugs M are forced downward and out of the pockets F, thus unlocking the frames and permitting of moving the frame section 13 out of and from the frame-section A by means of the thumb that depressed the knob L.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination with two flanged pivoted frame-sections, of a fitting secured on the flange of one section and provided with a recessed lip bent under said flange and having pockets at its inner end, a head on the other frame-section, a spring-pressed bolt in said head, which bolt is provided at its lower end with lugs that can enter the pockets in the lip 011 the other frame,substantially as herein shown and described.

2. The combination with two pivoted flanged U shaped frame-section s, one of them having a recess in the edge of its flange, of a fitting on said recessed flange, which fitting has a recessed lip bent under the flange and inclined inward and downward and provided at its inner end with pockets, a head on the other frame-section, a spring-pressed bolt in said head and side lugs on the lower end of said bolt, which lugs have their upper edges beveled, substantially as herein shown and 7 described.

3. The combination with two flanged pivoted U -shaped frames of which one is provided with a recess and at said recess with pockets in its under side for receiving lugs of a bolt, a head on the other frame-section, a spring-pressed bolt in said head and side lugs on the lower end of said bolt, substantially as herein shown and described.
