FASTENING FOR OVERSHOES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 272,587, dated February 2'7, 1853.

T 0 all whom tt may concern Be it known that I, BENJAMIN P. KIMBALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elmore, in the county of Ottawaand State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Fastenings for Overshoes, 850.. of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to fastenings for overshoes and the like; and it has for its object to provide a simple, effective, and convenient lastening, which may be easily manipulated, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing the fastening open. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same as it appears when closed. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal \ertical sectional view. Fig. 4 is a plan view, the top or covering plate having been broken away; and Fig.5 is a sectional view on the line y y in Fig. 4.

The same letters refer to the same parts in all, the figures.

A in the drawings represents a suitablyshaped flat slightly-curved plate, adapted to be secured, by sewing or otherwise, to one flap of the overshoe or other article or garment to which my improved fastening is to be applied. The said plate is provided with a staple or bail, B, forming the catch of the device.

0 is the clasp, the casing of which (which maybe cylindrical or of any suitable shape) comprises an upper portion, D, embodying the top plate and sides, and a bottom plate, E. SUlLltIrd or otherwise secured to the top part, 1), and carrying the operating parts of the device, as will be presently described.

The bottom plate, E, is provided with two hails or staples, F F, aflording bearings for a longitudinally-sliding pin, G, provided between the said bearings with a bent portion,

H, from one end of which a beveled catch or latch, I, projects inwardly, as shown. Pins or studs J J serve to hold in position aspring, K, acting against one end of the bent section H of the sliding pin in such a manner as to force the beveled latch I forwardly over a perforation or opening, M, in the bottom plate, E. The end of the pin or slide G projects through the side ot'the casing, so as to form a handle, by means of which the device may hemanipulated. The casing IS also provided with a laterally-projecting bail, N, enabling it to be attached by means ofan elastic strap or tape, or in any suitable manner, to one flap of the overshoe or other garment to which the device may be applied.

The operation of thisinvention will be readily understood. By entering the bail B of plate A through the opening M in the bottom plate it engages the latch I, by which the garment is thus held securely fastened. By pressing the end of the sliding pin G the latch is disengaged and the fastening opened.

I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The combination, with the plate A, having bail or staple B, of the clasp 0, consisting ofa casing, the bottom plate of which is provided with opening M, staples F F, sliding pin G, having bent portion H, provided with the beveled catch I and spring K, the end of said pin or slide projecting through the side of the casing, which latter is provided with a laterally-projecting bail, N, the whole arranged and operating substantially as set forth.
