Description

f1. FERGUSON.
SAFETY ATTACHMENTS FOR POCKET-BOOKS.
No. 190,751.. Patented May15, 1877.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
THOMAS FERGUSON, OF PARKERSBURG, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAFETY ATTACHMENTS FOR POCKET-BOOKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 190,751, dated May 15, 1877; application filed February 26, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS FERGUSON, of Parkersburg, in the county of Butler and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Safety Attachment to Pocket-Books, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a front view of a pocket-book with my improved safety attachment, and 'Fig. 2 a sectional end view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention relates to an improved safety attachment for pocket-books of all kinds, by which the same may be secured easily to the pocket-lining in such a manner that it cannot be withdrawn except by first releasing the fastening device; and it consists of a baseplate attached to the pocket-book with a sliding pin that enters raised guard-sockets of the base-plate and attaches the pocket-book to the lining by being passed through the same.
In the drawing, A represents a base-plate of my improved attachment, which base-plate is made of a longitudinal strip of suitable sheet metal, that is attached by prongs a to the outer or closing flap of the pocket-book. The baseplate A guides, by bent up side flanges B, a slide-piece, O, that is provided at the upper end with a bent-up rest, 12, for taking hold thereof with the finger, and at the lower end with a pin, D, that passes through a raised perforated guard-socket, e, of the base-plate and enters through a hole of a second guard-socket, 0, below the former when the slide is forced down until the rest b comes in contact with the guide-flanges B. By withdrawing the pin D the point of the same clears the lower guard-socket, and is brought into the upper socket, so as to prevent any injury to the fingers in handling the pocket-book, the rest-piece b of the slide forming at the same time contact with a stop, f, at the upper end of the base-plate A.
The attachment is operated in the following manner: The pocket-book is placed into the coat or other pocket with the attachment toward the outside, and the slide then pushed down by the fore-finger of one hand, while the other is pressed at the same time on the outside of the coat at about the height of the coat-pocket, so that the sliding pin passes through the inside lining before entering the lower guard-socket. The pocket-book is thus locked to the coat, and cannot be detached or dropped out of the pocket.
When the pocket-book is to be taken out for use the fore-finger takes hold of the restpiece of the slide and draws the slide up, releasing the pin from the lining and admitting the almost simultaneous withdrawal of the pocket-book.
By a little practice the pocket-book is almost instantly put in and attached, or detached and taken out of the pocket, and thus a neat and simple safety device for pocketbooks furnished.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A safety attachment for pocket-books, consisting of the base plate A, provided with raised guard-sockets e e, and a slide having straight pin D, that enters said sockets, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
THOMAS FERGUSON.
