To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL IV. \ViLsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atwater, in the county of Portage and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Safety-Lock for Pocket-Books; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to a new and useful safety attachment forpocket books.

The invention aims to improve and simplify the structure of'such attachments, particularly those illustrated, set forth and claimed in the Patents Nos. 921,7 7 5, granted May 18, 1909, and 1,004;,127 granted Sept. 26, 1911, and to permit the pocketbook to be securely locked in the pocket by a single prong, adapted to be' operated by only one operating member, for throwing the prong in and out of locking engagement with the pocket, thus effectively preventing an unauthorized withdrawal of the pocketbook or accidental falling of the same from the pocket.

Another object of the invention is the provision of means for locking the operating member in such a position as to prevent the same from being accidentally manipulated.

The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view of a foldable pocket book, showing the same equipped with the improved safety attachment. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a fragmentary portion of the pocket book, with the safety attachment applied, showing the locking prong projected. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-8 of Fig. 1. Fig. 1 is a sectional view on line l-l of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 a detail perspective view of the locking mechanism, the portion 10 being bent out ward so as to clearly disclose the structure in detail.

Referring to the drawings 1 designates the usual foldable pocket book, while 2 denotes the base plate of the safety attachment. This base plate is constructed of sheet metal or the like, and is provided with suitable apertures 5 at each end, whereby the same may be attached to the pocket book by several strands of thread or the like 3. This base plate may be attached by rivets, if

deemed desirable and more efficient. A lever 6, pivoted at 7 at the lower end of the base plate, is provided with a prong 8 which is adapted to pierce the fabric of the pocket. This prong is semi-circular, and engages a keeper 9, at one corner of the lower end of the base plate, when pierced through the fabric. This keeper 9 prevents the shield 10 from being pressed against the lever (S with its prong. Integral with the base plate are a plurality of guides 11, 12, 13 and 14. These guides are stamped from the same metal from which the plate is formed. Mounted in the guides is a reciprocatory connecting link 15, the end 16 of which is pivoted to the lever 6, as at 17, while the other end is pivoted at 18 to the operating lever 19. This operating lever is movable in a pair of guides 20 and 21, and is formed wit-h a lug 22.

hen the lever 19 is disposed as shown in Fig. 1, that portion of the lever below the handle is arranged in engagement with any one of the teeth 23 of the guide 21, for holding the lug on the operating lever out of registration with the struck-up portion 24. of the guide 20. To throw the operating lever in the position as shown in Fig. 2, the same is moved until the lug is in registration with the depression, then the operating lever is depressed downwardly, moving the connecting link with it, against the action of the spring 25, thus feeding the lug through the depression. The spring 25 is connected between a tongue 26, which is struck up from the link 15, and a guide 12. Immediately subsequently to depressing the operating lever, the same is moved laterally upon its pivot with the link 15, so as to cause the lug 22 to engage any one of the notches 27 of the guide 20, .thus holding the prong S pierced through the fabric of the pocket and in engagement with its keeper 9. hen the prong 8 is thrown to an unlocked position, the lever 6 is limited in its movement by contacting with the projection 28, as shown.

The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is 1.
