T0 all whom t may concern Be it known that I, AUGUST W. PoLTn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago,- in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Satchel and Bag Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a novel latch or catch designed to detachably secure the two telescoping parts of a satchel or bag frame together.
T he object of the invention is to provide a device of this character, consisting of few and simple parts; which can be easily and cheaply made; which is satisfactory in operation, and not readily liable to get out of order.
The invention consists in a device capable of carrying out the foregoing objects, and more particularly in the features and details of construction hereafter more fully set forth in the specification and claims. i
Referring to the drawings, in which similar numerals indicate the same parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the upper portion of an ordinary hand bag having two of the devices of this invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view illustrating in the lower portion the catch mechanism proper, and 1n the upper portion a view taken from below, illustratingthe cover therefor. Fig. 3 is a sectional side view of the device of this invention, while Fig. 4 is a sectional end view of the parts illustrated in Fig. 1, taken just inside of the right hand end of Fig. 3.
In constructing the device, a rectangular case 10 is provided, closable by a cover 12, there being contained between the case and cover, mechanism for properly controlling a latch dog 14 passing through the bottom of the case and through the ordinary two telescoping flanged jaws 16 and 18 of a hand bag, satchel or grip, whose lock 20 and handle 21, together with the parts thus far enumerated, appear in Fig. 1.
The whole object of this invention is to provide a small and neat case 1() and cover 12, containing very simple mechanism operatable by the user of the satchel lor bag for moving the latch 14 up and down through the member 16 and into and out of engagement with the member 18 of the bag, thus permitting or prohibiting, as the case may be, the ordinary movement of the parts 16 and 18 with reference to each other, required for opening and closing the satchel or bag.
In order to accomplish the desired result, the latch 14 is secured by any suitable means, such for instance as the rivets 20, to a flat arm 22, pivoted upon rod or pin 24, and urged downward when the parts are viewed as in Fig. 3, by the coiled spring 26; that is to say, this spring 26 tends constantly to force latch 14 from the dotted line to the full line position of Fig. 3. The end of case 10 opposite to the location of pin 24 is cut away so as toallow for the placing in said open end of the case of the kbell crank mem# ber 30-32 pivoted on rod or hinge 34. This bell crank 30-32 is so constructed that when the parts are in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 3, arm 30 of the bell crank forms what is, in external appearance at least, as clearly appears in Fig. 1, the end of the device, while arm 32 of the bell crank does not interfere with the spring 26 pushing latch 14 as far downward or toward locking position as it will go. On the other hand, this bell crank is so constructed 'that when the parts have been moved to the dotted line position of Fig. 3, arm 32 of the bell crank has been moved to such a position that it fixedly holds lever 22 with latch 14 at its highest elevated position with latch 14 entirely clear of plate 18, so that so far as the device in question is concerned, the hand bag or satchel may be opened. Arm 30 of the bell crank is, as shown, made of suitable length and provided with a bevel surface 36 adapted to be engaged by the thumb nail of the user to move the parts from the full line to the dotted line position of Fig. 3.
Movement of the bell crank in a clockwise directiomas viewed in Fig. 3, beyond the dotted line position of that figure is prevented by any suitable means, as for instance by a'stop 38 formed on one wall of the case 10. p
The parts thus far described are closed and covered by the cover 12 of box-like form, designed to slip over the case 10, heretofore described, said cover being secured upon member 16 of the` satchel or grip by suitable lugs 40 entering suitable recesses provided for the purpose. This cover 12 is of peculiar shape in that it is provided with a recessed end wall 42 adapted, as shown, to pass downward between the arms 30 and 32 of the bell crank so that wholly independently of the stop 38 heretofore referred to, this wall 42 acts as a stop for arm 32 of the bell crank to prevent -excessive movement of the bell crank, while at the same time, this wall 42 makes a closure for the case 10 in all positions of the bell crank, the result being that the parts within the case 10 are concealed and the external parts all present a neat appearance when the bell crank is in the dotted line position of Fig. 3.
In the operation of the device, the parts are assembled as` shown in the drawings. l/Vhen the operator desires to open the bag, he takes hold of the two bell crank arms 30, one at each end of the bag, and moves them from the full line to the dotted line position of Fig. 3. He now opens the bag and does what he likes with it, then closes it and moves the arms() from the dotted to the full line position, thereby catching or securing the parts 16 and 18 of the satchel or grip together.
The device is exceedingly simple; consists of few moving parts, and therefore highly efficient in operation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the class described, a substantially inclosed receptacle, a pivoted arm inside said receptacle, a latch member carried by said arm, projecting outside the receptacle, spring means within the receptacle urging said pivoted arm to project said latch from the receptacle, a bell crank pivoted -in an opening in the receptacle, so that one arm of the bell crank is outside of the receptacle and forms a wall thereof while the other arm of the bell crank is within the receptacle and engages and controls said first mentioned lever, for the purposes set forth.
2. In a device of the class described, a generally rectangular case closed on its bottom, two sides and one end, an arm pivoted within said case, adjacent to its closed end, a latch member carried by said pivoted arm projecting through the bottom of the case, a spring forcing said lever toward the bottom of the case, a bell crank member pivoted at the open end of the case, having one arm normally generally closing that end of the case and the other arm normally lying under said pivoted arm, whereby said pivoted arm tends to press that arm of the bell crank against thel bottom of the case, and a stop device limiting the movement of said bell crank beyond a given predetermined posit-ion remote from said last described position.
3. In a device of the class described, a generally rectangular case open at one end, mechanism Within said case to be controlled from outside the case, a bell crank pivoted Within said opening in the case, and one arm entering the case to control the mechanism contained therein, and a cover member for the case, carrying a closure end for the open end of the case ittable intermediate between the two arms of the bell crank, for the purposes set forth.
4. In a device of the class described, a retaining case open at one end, mechanism within the case to be controlled from the outside thereof, a bell crank pivoted at said opening of the case with one arm entering the case to control said mechanism therein, a separable closure member for said opening in the case, insertible in position between the two arms of the bell crank, and means retaining said closure member in position for the purposes set forth.
5. In a device of the class described, a substantially inclosed rectangular case, provided with means for securing it to the frame of a bag or satchel, there being in one wall of said case a recess, within which a pivoted lever member normally lies and from which it is movable by the hand of the operator of the device, an arm extending from said pivoted lever, forming a bell crank therewith entering the interior of said case, said second mentioned lever or bell crank arm being rendered invisible from outside Athe case in all positions of the lirst mentioned lever or arm through the presence of a plate or Wall located between the bell crank arms, and latch mechanism inside the case controlled by the movement of the bell crank device, for the purposes set forth.
