Description

FANNY II. JACOB. or VLOUIS, MISSOURI.
SAFETY B'AGfFASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 1', 1907.
Application tiled June 19, 1906. `Serial No. 322,473.
T0 all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, FANNY F. JACOB, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Bag- Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to a safety bag-fastener, and is particularly adapted for the frames of hand-bags, purses, hand-satchels, suit-cases, and the like; and the object of my invention is toY so construct the frames of hand-bags and the like and the .fastening device therefor as that said fastening device is in a position below the top of the frame where it is not liable to be accidentally struck by the hand or a stationary object and released.
To the above purposes my invention conlsists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of a hand-bag provided with my improved safety-fastener. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken through the frames of my improved fastener and showing the manner in which said frames are hinged together and the manner of fastening the ends of the baghandle to one of said frames. Fig. 4 is a detail section showing the fastener in an open position. Fig. 5 is a detail section analogous to Fig, 4 and showing the fastener in a closed position.
Referring by` numerals to the accompany- Ing drawings, 1 and 2 designate the frames of my improved bag-fastener, the main body portions of which have their ends 3 bent downwardly at right angles, and the lower ends of these downwardly-bent portions are hinged together by means of rivets 4 or in any suitable manner. These frames are preferably constructed of thin metal and are in cross-section similar to ordinary angle-iron. The frame 2 is constructed a slightdegree smaller than is theframe 1 in order that the horizontal flange of said frame 2 will snugly fit within the horizontal flange of the frame 1 when said frames are closed or swung together.
Formed at the center of each frame and any suitable l. midway between the downwardly-bent ends 5, and formed- 3 are the U-shaped bendsl through the center of the vertical frames of `this U-shaped bend on the frame 2 is an aperture 6; Formed integral with this flange immediately below this aperture is an outwardly and downwardly projecting lip 7. Formed on or fixed to the inside face of the vertical fiange'of the U-sliaped portion' of the opposite frame 1 is a horizontally-disposed pin 8, on the outer end of which is pivotally 4mounted a button 9. Formed on or fixed to the outer face of this flange immediately o pposite the pin 8 is a small button or knob 10. The body 11 of the bag, purse, or Satchel on which my improved safety-fastener is employed may be constructed of leather, fabric, or any suitable material, and the top edges thereof are securely fastened in any suitable manner to the inside faces of the vertical faces of the flanges 1 and 2. At the bottom and center of the body of the bag or satchel is formed a small auxiliary depending pocket or receptacle 11a, which is for the purpose of receiving the coin-purse and maintaining it in a secure or fixed position at the bottom of the bag or Satchel.
provided at its upper circular loop, 'the outer face end with a small semiis secured at its lower ends to of the frame 1 by rivets or in manner.
Wherea hand-bag is e uipped with my improved fastener, the small loop at the upper end of the handle 12 fits snugly over the wrist of the person carrying the bag, and thus tends to prevent the slipping of the handle downwardly over the persons hand. When my improved bag-fastener is closed, the pin 8 and button 9 through the aperture 6, `and said button 9 is snapped into a vertical position with its lower portion engaging the outer face of the lip 7',H and when so positioned the bag will be effectually closed, and as the button 9 is in a plane some distance below the top of the frames of the fastener said button will not be liable to be struck by the hand of the person carrying the bag, so as to accidentally open the fastener. To open my improved fastener, the button 9 is swung into a horizontal position, and then by engaging the button 10 and the lip 7 ,the frames 1 and 2 may readily be swung apart.
A bag-fastener of my improved construction is simple and inexpensive, is readily adapted for all forms of handbags and A suitable handle 12,
