Be itknown that l, CHARLES BLUsr, of the city and county of New York, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful lmprovemcnt in Fastenings for Bag or Pocket- Bool: Frames, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is applicable to fastenings, whereby two hinged members or portions of to the metallic frames which are ordinarily applied to handbags, pocket-books, and purses may be connected at the top or the side oppo site their hinges, in order to close the bags, pocket-books, or purses; and the invention particularly relates to that class of fast-enings in which a hollow or box-like catch pivoted to a horn projecting from one frame portion is actuated by a spring contained within the catch to engage and hold the other frame portion.

lhe object of my invent-ion is to provide a very serviceable and strong catch for the purpose, in which the parts are so combined as to cover the pivot whereby the catch is secured to the horn projecting fron the frame portion, and thus enable a more ornamental finish to be given to the fastening.

The i nrention consists in novel combinations of parts, which are particularlyhereinafter de scribed, and pointed out in the claims.

A. A designate the two portions of the frame, which are hinged together at Z) in a well-known manner, and which may be of metal and of hollow or tubular construction. Upon the frame portion A, I have represented a stud or projection, Z2, and upon the frame portion A 122,881. (No model.)

is a catch, B, which is adapted to engage with thestnd or projection b to hold the two frame portions together, and the bag, pocket-book, or purse of which they form a part closed.

A designates a born or projection, which may be secured by riveting or otherwise to the frame portion A", so as to form a rigid part thereof, and which projects at the top of the frame portion, and has its greatest width in a plane transverse to the. length ofthe frame portion. The catch B is of hollow or box-like construction, and, as here shown, comprises a front, I)", a top, I), and side portions or cheeks,

A spiral spring, D, extends approximately horizontally or parallel with the top I) of the hollow catch B, and bears at one end upon the front b of said catch, and

at the other end upon a projection or ear, 0, with which the horn A is provided. This spring, therefore, has a tendency to tilt the catch upon its pivot in the direction indicated by the arrow in Figs. 1 and 2, and to thereby hold the catch in strong engagement with the stud or projection I), as shown in Fig. 1.

In closing a bag it is merely necessary to bring the frame portions A A together, slightly raising the catch upon its pivot, so as to enable it to pass over the stud or projection I), and as the frame portions are brought closer together the catch 13 will snap into engagement, by the force of the spring I), with the stud or projection b.

B designates a knob-like case, which is of 0 metal and hollow, and open at the bottom, so as to fit over the catch proper, B. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, a projection or stud, d, is provided in the top of the catch 13, and enters a hole, d, in the top of the casing or case B, 5 and I have also shown the case B as tacked atits lower edge by solder (Z to the front of the catch B. In lieu of providing the catch 13 with a stud or projection, d, entering ahole,

may form the case with an inward indentation or projection, (Z, entering a recess or hole, (1', in the top of the catch B, as shown in Fig. 4, and such inward indentation or projection d, engaging the recess cl in the catch B, is the full equivalent of the stud or projection d and hole d shown in Figs. 2 and 3. It will beobserved that the outer case, B, gives an ornamental finish to the rectangular box-like catch B, arranged within it, and that it entirely con ceals the rivet or pin 0, whereby the catch B is pivoted to the horn A. If any repair to the fastening be necessary, all that is required to obtain access to it is to apply heat sufficient to melt the solder tacking (Z and the outer case B may then be readily removed.

Vhat I. claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, with the two portions A A of a bag or pocketbook frame, one provided with the horn A projecting rigidly outward therefrom, of a hollow catch pivoted to the horn, and the spiral spring D, extending approximately horizontally and hearing at one end against the horn and at the other end against the interior of the hollow catch, substantially as herein described.

2. The combination, with the two portions portions A A, one provided witha projection,

b, and the other with a horn, A, of the hollow catch pivoted to the horn and open at the bottom, a spring applied within the catch and between it and said horn for actuating the catch, and an outer knob-like case inclosing the catch and secured thereto by a projection and hole or recess at the top of the catch, and by solder at the open bottom of the catch, substantially as herein described.
