Description
Oct. 27, 1931. c. A. LIND BOX COVER FASTENER Filed May 31, 1930 INVENTOR Egg: 1: J E i? L? ATTORNEY Patented Oct. 27, 1931 UNITED STATES CARL A. LIND, OF MARATHON, IOWA BOX COVER FASTENER' Application filed May 31,
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in fasteners of a type designed for securing the lids of egg cases or crates.
One of the principal objects of the invention consists of a means of anchorage for the fasteners being disposed in such manner to serve the added purpose of wear plates and to obviate flaring of the secured ends of the lid proper.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision and arrangement of fasteners of this character swingably supported upon the wear plates to occupy their respective positions.
More specifically stated the fasteners are designed for yielding biting engagement with appropriate portions of the egg case or crate proper.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further consists of the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a form of egg case or crate with the invention applied and in use.
Figures 2 and 3 are fragmentary end elevations of the case showing by full and dotted lines the respective positions of the fasteners when shifted for active use.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary top plan view of the egg case showing the particular disposition of the wear plate.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on line 55 of Figure 4,
Figure 6 is a detail perspective view of the fastener.
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates generally a form of egg case or crate having a closure lid 11 projecting at its ends outwardly beyond the extremities of the crate and reposing upon the upper surfaces of cleats 12 generally employed for the purpose of accommodating the shanks of forms of fastenings, not shown, usually 1930. Serial No. 458,234.
passed through the overlapping extremities of said lid. It is my purpose to employ the present invention upon a crate or case of this character and to preserve the overlapping relation of the extended ends of the closure lid and the cleats 12. This is accomplished through the provision and arrangement of wear plates 13 of angular formation, that is, the respective faces thereof re-v pose against the upper side of the lid and the outer surface and ends of said lid, substantially as illustrated in Figures 1 and 5 of the drawings. Barbs or penetrating elements 14, carried by and struck from thosefaces of the wear plates 13 reposing upon the upper surface of the closure lid 11,- are embedded within the latter in the manner suggested in Figure 5 of the drawings whereby the wear plates and closure lid are to be removed and replaced as a unit.
The fasteners 15 are to be constructed from lengths of spring wire formed with attaching loops 16 swingably supported within sleeves 17 arranged upon the outer depending sides of the angular forms of wear plates.
The body portions of the fasteners have the ends 18 therefor extended from the attaching loops 16 and offset, as at 19, to underlie the cleats 12 in the manner shown in. Figure 5 whereby the pointed extremities 20 of said offsets may be embedded for appreciable portions of their lengths within said cleats. Open loops 21 forming the means of connection between the attaching loops 16 and the longer ends of the fasteners are frictionally engaged with the shorter ends 18 to obviate fulcrums from which the longer ends of the fasteners may be swung. The extrem ities of the longer ends of the fasteners are. also successively offset as at 22 and 23 respectively after the manner of the ends 18. It is to be noted that the spring tension of the fasteners themselves and the biting engagement of the extremities thereof with the 7 under surfaces of the cleats 12 provide the means for securing the fasteners in position for use and against accidental displacement. It is to be noted that the fasteners may be arranged in any size and number upon the wear plates 13 and as suggested in Figure 3 of the drawings two of the fasteners may arranged adjacent the ends of one' of the wear plates whereby a solitary fastener may he arranged adjacent the middle of the other oppositely disposed wear plate. It is obvious- 1y apparent from the respective positions of the fasteners shown in Figures 2 and 3 of the ing portions overlyingthe outer sides/of the cleats, sleeves formed at intervals upon the positely disposed relation'to the connections V of the lid therewith drawings how the fasteners are lockingly engaged and released with relation to the cleats.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions andminor details of construction, and the right'is herein reserved to make such changes asproperly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
