B65d 45/18 U.S. Cl. 24-73 3 Claims ABSTRACT F THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates generally to the field of shipping containers, and more particularly to an improved metallic clip capable of being engaged upon an upwardly extending wall of a top opening container, for the purpose of providing loop means selectively engageable by the side peripheral wall of a lid or cover to be retained thereon.
Devices of this general type are known in the prior art, and the invention lies in specific constructional details permitting ease of installation, as well as low manufacturing costs.
It is among the principal objects of the present invention to provide a device of the above class which may be fabricated as a single metallic stamping in blank form t0 be subsequently bent to finished conguration wherein the same may be readily installed.
Another object of the invention herein lies in the provision of an improved clip of the class described which is adapted to be engaged with the fibrous wall at a large number of spaced points, whereby any strains involved may be distributed over a substantial area.
A further object of the invention lies in the provision of improved clip means of the class described, in which the loop forming portion thereof is adapted to perform a camming function upon installation of a lid or cover with which it is engaged.
A further object of the invention lies in the provision of an improved clip which may be conveniently installed upon a container wall without resort to special tools, and with only ordinary skill in the art.
These objects, as well as other incidental ends and advantages, will more fully appear in the progress of the following disclosure, and be pointed out in the -appended claims.
In the drawing, to which reference will be made in the specification, similar reference characters have been ernployed to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
FIGURE 1 is an end elevational view of an embodiment of the invention.
FIGURE 2 is a front elevational view thereof.
FIGURE 3 is a rear elevational view thereof.
FIGURE 4 is a bottom plan view thereof.
FIGURE 5 is a fragmentary view in elevation, partly in section, showing the installation of the embodiment upon a container wall.
FIGURE 6 is a fragmentary sectional view showing the device in tfully installed condition upon a fibrous container.
3,466,710 Patented Sept. 16, 1969 ICC In accordance with the invention, the device, generally indicated by reference character 10, is illustrated in FIG- URES 5 and 6in operative association with a fibrous container 11 having a detachable lid 12.
As best seen in FIGURES 2 and 3, the .device 10 is preferably formed from a unitary blank of sheet metal, as a result of stamping and bending operations. It includes an inner wall 15, an upper wall 16 and an outer wall 17, the walls 15-17 being interconnected by fold lines 18 and 19.
The inner wall 15 is bounded by an outer surface 20, an inner surface 21, a lower edge 22, and side edges 23 and 24. Extending toward the outer wall are a plurality of peripherally located locking barbs or tabs 25, which cooperate with a plurality of medially disposed barbs or tabs 26. An elongated through opening 27 is positioned adjacent the lower edge 22.
The upper wall 16 is of smooth configuration, including an inner surface 30, an outer surface 31 and end edges 32 and 33.
The outer wall 17 is bounded by side edges 40 and 41 and a lower edge 42. Itis provided with a through opening 43 aligned with lthe opening 27 and inner and outer surfaces 44 and 45, respectively. As best seen in FIGURES 1 and 5, the wall 17 includes first and second planar areas 46 and 47, respectively, interconnected by a looped member 48. The looped member 48 includes a concave portion 49, the outer surface of which provides a camming action upon engagement with the lid 12, as well as an arcuate convex portion 50 and a planar portion 51 interconnected with the second planar area 47 at a fold edge 52.
Installation of the device is as illustrated in FIGURE 5, wherein the lower edges 22 and 42 are spread apart, this being assisted by the camming effect of the barbs 25, 26 and corresponding barbs 53 and 54 upon engagement with the upper edge 55 of a container Wall 56. Next, the inner and outer walls are pushed together so that the barbs engage and penetrate the exposed surfaces of the container wall as shown in FIGURE 6. If necessary, optional nut and bolt means 58 may be employed to penetrate the openings 27 and 43 to main-tain the device in engagement, but in most cases, the engagement of the barbs will be suficient.
Upon engagement ofthe lid 12 which includes adjacent the lower edge 59' thereof a rectangularly shaped opening 60, the edge is cammed outwardly by the concave portion 49 to a position where the lower edge slips past the convex portion 50, wherein the planar portion 51 is engaged, this interaction maintaining the lid in fixed position upon the opening in the container. Suitable retaining means 62 is then engaged Within the looped member to prevent accidental removal. If desired, this may include a padlock (not shown).
I wish it to be understood that I do not consider the invention limited to the precise details of structure shown and set forth in this specification, for obvious modifications` will occur to those skilled in the art to which the invention pertains.
I claim:
1. A metallic clip for use in securing a detachably associated lid having an apertured container encircling rim upon an open fibrous container comprising: a unitary blank of material having an inner wall, an outer wall, and an upper wall interconnecting said inner and outer walls; said inner wall having an outer surface, a plurality of container engaging barbs extending outwardly of said surface; said outer wall having an inner surface oppositely disposed and parallel to that of said inner Wall, a plurality of container engaging 'barbs extending inwardly thereof; said barbs facing each other, extending toward each other, and directed toward said upper Wall; said outer Wall including a pair of normally aligned planar portions each provided with barbs thereon, and a loop forming portion interconnecting said planar portions and extending outwardly from an edge of the container to which the clip is attached a distance sufficient to extend through an aperture in said lid, said loop-forming portion including a concave surface thereon serving as a camming means to facilitate snap engagement with the aperture.
2. Structure in accordance with claim 1, said loop forming portion including a concave surface thereon serving as a camming means.
3. Structure in accordance with claim 1 including means 4 penetrating said inner and outer Walls to maintain them in contact With an engaged brous Wall of a container.
