Application ined september 2s, ,1910. Vserial No. 583,745.

Be it known that I, JOHN P. HUMMEL, a citizen of the United States, residing in Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of \Visconsin, have invented new and useful. Improvements in Shipping-Boxes,`
of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying dra-W- ings, which are a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in shipping boxes and more particularly to shipping boxes formed of paste board and which are so constructed that tlieymy be folded to occupy a minimum `amount of space and when required for use can be quickly unfolded and placed in condition to receive articles or goods therein for shipment.
It is one of the objects of the invention to provide a box of the character described with a separable cover which may be placed on the 'body portion of the box and securely fastened thereto and sealed to permitA the shipping of said boXby express orA freight and to prevent the contents thereof from being surreptitiously removed or tampered with.
A further object of the invent-ion is to provide a box of the character described with a separable cover which is simple in eoiistruction and inexpensive to n'mnutseture and which muy be quickly fastened to or unfasteued from the body portion of the box with but. e minimum amount of labor.
Vith the above. and other objects in view, the invention consists of the shipping' box and its parts und combinations as set forth in the claim, und all equivalents thereof.
ln the accompanying dra wing in which the same reference characters indicate the same parts in the several views: Figure l a top view. of the box with the cover sealed thereto. parts of the box and cover being broken away und other parts in section; Fig. is :in ond vieu' thereof. ports broken :in'av and other parts in section: Figi'. -l is u vo' i: l tional detailed view of one of the upp rners of the box: und Fig. ilv is i pm .rtive view ol the complete box with the over iu position und sealed and with the lower joints ot' the box rovei'cfl by stripsot paper which uro glued to the box.
'lirici-ring to the drawing the numeral indicates the body portion of a toldable box1 preferably ol: thichV past-e board umterial. and termed with .side and end walls (3 und 7 respectively, which are provided with lower extensions 8 and 9 adapted to be folded inwardly toward each other to form the bottom portion .10 of the box. The boxes :1re usually kept in collapsed form to economize space and when desired for use, are opened to shape and the bottom and end joints are covered with strips of paper or other binding 11 which are glued tothe body of the box thus securely holding the body portion in open position.
The cover 12 of the box is provided with `the usual depending rectangular rim 13 which telescopes over the upper portion of the box body. The covers are also kept in collapsed form and when desired for use, the side and end portions are bent do\ vn wardly and the corners lapped over each other and fastened together in any desirable manner. A
`The upper portion of vthe body of the box is provided with eyelets or staples 14 projectingtherefrom Which'are positioned to extend through alined apertures 15 provided in the depending,r rim 'of the box cover and have :i securinglr means, preferably in the form of a wire 16, passed therethrough and drawn taut and the ends thereof secured together or connected by means of a seal 17. The eyelets'or staples are preferably formed of wire bent into U-shzipe and have shouldered portions 18 which are adapted to rest against the outer surface of the box and hold said staples projecting therefrom a desired distance so they will extend` through the cover portion sufficiently for to peru'iit the wire being drawn through the eye outside ot' said cover. The prongs or ends of the staples extend through the body of the box and :1re clenched thereto. The cover is slightly larger than the body portion of the box to permit the cover to be easily slipped over the staples.
l\Vhile the staples are lshown as projccting From the body of the box in the preferred exeiupliication of the invention. t 'is obvious that they may be fastened to oud proiect from the riiuot thecover und extend outwardly through apertures provided in tbe vertical -walls of the box bully :ind
wired in the suine nummer as the prol'rrrodl forni. When thus. constructed.y tho rover. ot course. would be of i size to lit within the body portion of the box.
lt is to be u-udorstood'tluzt this invention is not limited to :inyspocitic form or :ir-
rangement ofApar-ts except in so far as Such limitations are specified in the claim.
What I claim as my invention'is:
shipping-box, comprising a body portion of rectangular form having an open top, staples secured to and projecting from the box sides and ends adjacent to the vopen* top, a cover portion of rectangular form having a bendable depending rim provided with apertures through Which the' staples extend when the cover is pla-ced on the body portion, the rim being adapted to be sprung outwardly to pass over the staples which are of suieient length to project through the apertures and beyond the rim, and a 1.5 bendable member extending through the projecting portions of the stapes and around the cover rim to draw said rim in- Wardly toward the body portion.
In testimony whereof, I aix my signa- 20 ture, in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN PETER HUMMEL.
