BOX FASTENER' M R M m A P Wm M Wm M M Q m wm A 2 t I M M. 2: A
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MICHAEL MORAN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
BOX-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 328,422, dated October 13, 1885.
Application filed May 21, 1885. Serial No. 166,295. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MIoHAEL MORAN, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Box-Fasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which Figure l is a perspective view of an egg case or box having my improved fastening. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view showing the fastening disengaged from the stud. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the fastening engaged with the stud. Fig. 4 is a section taken on line 4 4, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a section taken on line 5 5, Fig. 4, part broken away. Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail perspective View of the box and cleat. Fig. 7 illustrates a modification.
My invention relates to an improved fastening for egg-cases and like boxes; and my invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, A represents an egg case or box, and B its lid or cover. 0 are the cleats secured to the box, and D the cleats secured to the lid or cover, as usual, and in their outer surface are grooves I, to receive the fastenings J, which consist each of a piece of spring metal, the free end of which is bent into the form of a hook or ring, J, as shown, and engages under a stud, L, projecting from the box-cleat. The upper ends of the springs are bent into hooks N, that engage over the lid-cleats D, (see Fig. 4,) and are held on the inside of the cleats by staples 0. (See Figs. 5 and 4.) The cleats D are notched out at P to receive these books, and the upper edge of the box (see Fig. 6) is notched out at T for the same purpose.
The fastenings fit up close against one wall of the grooves I, (see Figs. 2 and 3,) and by simply pressing on their free upturned ends U they will be forced down from the position shown in Fig. 3 to that shown in Fig. 2, out of contact with the studs, and then by forcing outward on them they are sprung into the position shown by dotted lines, Fig. 4, when the lid' can be removed or lifted off. If either hook is too long to engage the stud properly, it can be shortened by simply bending its free end U upward.
The hook could be secured in the box-cleat and engage a stud on the lid cleat. (See Fig. 7.)
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with the box and lid having cleats, ofthe fastening J, having ahook, N, to engage over one ofthe cleats, a springhook, J, and a stud projecting from the other cleat adapted to engage said spring-hool ,st1bstantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a boX and lid having cleats, of the fastening J, having a hook, N, to engage over the lid-cleat, a spring-hook, J, and a stud projecting from the box-cleat adapted to engage said spring-hook, the hook N being held in place by a staple, and the spring-hook J adapted to be disengaged from the stud by pressure on its upturned end, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with a boX and lid hav ing grooved cleats, of the fastening J, fitting against one of the walls of the grooves, and having a hook, N, to engage over one of the cleats, a spring-hook, J, and a stud projecting from the other cleat adapted to engage said spring-hook, substantially as set forth.
MICHAEL MORAN.
In presence of GEO. H. KNIGHT, SAML. KNIGHT.
