J. H. RBVIS. WAGON BDLSTBR.-
No. 438,278. Patented Oct. 14, 1890.
s, we w W) rw @j NITED STATES JOHN HENRY REVIS, OF VERNON, ILLINOIS.
WAGON-BOLSTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 438,278, dated October 14, 1890.
Application filed .Tuly 22, 1890. Serial No, 359,555. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN HENRY Rnvis, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vernon, in the county of Marion and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Wagon- Bolster, of which the following is a specication.
The invention relates to improvements in adjustable standards and holsters for vehicles.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple and comparatively inexpensive standard capable of lateral adjustment and adapted to be readily secured at any desired point along a bolster.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying` drawings, and pointed out in the clailn hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a wagon-bolster and a pair of standards constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, l designates a wagon-bolster, which is provided at each end with a horizontal slot 2, and having adjustably mounted thereon a standard 3, which consists of a central wooden portion 4. and metal straps or plates 5 and 6, the former extending along the front and rear faces of the central wooden portion a, and bolted thereto and-being formed integral with each other, and extending beyond the lower end of the wooden portion across the bolster, and having their lower ends 7 bent horizontally and arranged beneath the bolster, the lower portions of said straps or plates 5 forming a clamp to engage the bolster. These lower portions are provided with perforations 8, th rough which passes a bolt 9, which is arranged in the longitudinal slot 2 and provided with a thumbnut I0. By this construction the standard can be readily clamped at any point along the bolster, and by loosening the thu mb-nut it can be readily moved along the bolster. The metal plates or straps 5 extend along the side faces of the Wooden portion d, and have their upper ends 11 arranged at the top of the wooden portion, and the outer strap or plate is provided with an integral brace l2, which is composed of the inclined portion 13, extending outward and downward from the lower portion of the standard, and a horizontal portion 14, extending along the bolster from the lower end of the inclined portion to the standard and forming a broad bearing-surface to facilitate the adjustment of the standard and to prevent lateral bending or canting of the standard.
It will be readily seen that the standard is simple and comparatively inexpensive in oonstruction, and is adapted to be readily adj usted along the bolster, and is capable of being securely retained at any desired point throughout the length of the latter.
What I claim is- The combination of the bolster provided with a longitudinal slot 2,the adjustable standard comprising the central wooden portion 4, the plates 5, extending along the front and rear faces of the wooden portion and projecting below the same and provided with perforations and forming a clamp to receive the bolster, and the plates or straps 6, extending along the side faces of the wooden portion, the outer strap or plate having formed integral with it a brace consisting of the incline portion and the horizontal portion arranged upon the bolster and extending from the lower end of the incline portion to the standard, and
the bolt passing through the perforations of the plates 5 and being arranged in the slot 2 and provided with a thu rnb-nut, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JOHN HENRY REVIS.
