UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY SWAN, OF OSHKOSH, WISCONSIN.
KING-BOLT SOCKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 578,586, dated March 9, 1897.
Application filed July 25, 1896.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY C. SWAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oshkosh, in the county of Winnebago and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in King-Bolt Sockets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
' The object of my invention is to provide a cheap, simple, and novel king-bolt socket and means for fastening it to the axle; and the invention consists in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation thereof, and Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation.
Referring to the parts by letters, A represents the front axle.
B represents a plate having a vertical part b,- which is adapted to lie against either the front or rear face of the axle, and a curved top b, which is shaped to conform with the top of the axle and extend a greater or less distance down on the opposite side of the axle. This plate may be in part secured to the axle by the horizontal bolts b which pass Serial No. 600,481. (No model.)
through the axle and the vertical portion 1) of the plate.
0 represents a vertical king-bolt socket which is integral with the vertical part b of said plate and is centrally placed thereon.
D represents a clip having a bifurcated rear end, thereby forming two parallel legs at d. The front end of the clip has a single leg cl. This clip embraces the plate B and the axle, the two legs d d lying upon opposite sides of the king-bolt socket. These three legs (1 d d pass through the clip yoke E, which lies against the bottom of the axle, and the nuts d screw upon the ends of said legs.
Having described my invention, I claim- The combination of a plate B having a vertical part and a curved top, and a vertical king-bolt socket which is formed centrally upon the vertical part of the plate B and is integral therewith, with the axle, a clip embracing said plate and axle, and having a single leg at one end and two legs at the other end which lie on opposite sides of the kingbolt socket, and the clip-yoke, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
' HENRY C. SWAN.
