WAGON-POLE consume,
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 608,815, dated August 9, 1898. Application filed May 27, 1897. Serialllo, 638,417. (No modeL) zen of the United States, residing at Way Cross, in the county of :Ware and State of Georgia, have invented certain, new and usef 111 Improvements in Wagon-Pole Oouplin gs and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in wagons, and it more particularly relates to means for coupling the front and rear axles.
The invention consists in the combination of the front and rear axles of a wagon, a reach or coupling-pole, and an antifriction metallic block connected with the front end of the reach for connection with the front axle.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective of the front axle and reach connection therewith. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail perspective of the antifriction coupling-block and strap, and Fig, 3 is an enlarged detail perspective of the'strap by itself.
1 is the antifriction-block, which for convenience of description I call the couplingblock. This block is formed by preference of Babbitt metal or other like antifriction metal, with the groove or recess 5 on three sides of it, into which the strap 2 fits, and the block is also provided with the hole 6 for the kingbolt. The block and strap are secured together by means of bolts 7 7, as shown in the drawings, and the reach and strap are coupled together by means of bolts 8 8 and nuts 96 For more firmly securing the strap with the reach 3 I employ a band or clasp 10. A bearing-plate 4 is arranged upon the upper surface of the front axle, the same being provided with central holes for king-bolt. The
- plate is connected or secured in place on the axle by suitable screws 12 in the usual way. 15 is the kingbolt, which is applied and operates in the usual way. Oil cups and ducts 13 are made in block 1,
Through the construction and combination which I have described there is no danger of splitting or breaking the front end of the reach or coupling-pole, as is the case according to the ordinary construction of wagon. The metallic block 1 furnishes an improved socket or seat for the king-bolt and is conveniently connected with thefront end of the reach by means of the strap 2, and besides being of antifriction construction in itself provision is made for lubrication between the block and the bearing-plate.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
The combination with the front axle of a vehicle, having a bearing-plate secured thereto and the king-bolt extending therethrough, and the reach, of a rectangular coupling-block having an opening therein through which the king bolt passes, and having recesses or grooves in the front and side edges thereof, the said grooves communicating with each other, a U-shaped strap of metal or other unyielding material fitting within said groove and secured to said block, the parallel arms of said strap straddling said pole and secured thereto, and a securing band or clamp embracing the parallel arms 'ofsaid strap for preventing the separation thereof, as and for the purpose described In testimony whereof ,I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
