UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WAGON-HOUND.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 5, 1907.
Application filed July 2,1906. Serial No. 324,437.
To aZl whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST H. FREITAG, a citizen of the United States, residing at C0- lumbia, in the county of Richland and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVagon- Hounds and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is an improved hound for wagons; and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the front truck of a wagon provided with my improved hound. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the hound, taken on the plane indicated by the line a a of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of the same, taken on the plane indicated by the line b l) of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a similar view taken on the plane indicated by the line 0 c of Fig. 1.
My improved hound is periform, comprising the semicircular portion 1, the straight converging side portions 2, and the parallel extensions 3 of said side portions. The said hound is made of a single piece of angle-steel of L shape in cross-section with the webs uppermost and outermost, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4. The extensions 3 receive the tongue (1 between them, the inner end of tongue being secured to a bar 6, the ends of which are connected to the converging portions 2 of the hound. In those portions of the hound which are directly above the front axle f are blocks 9, which lie in the angles formed in the sides of the hound and are secured in place by the bolts h, which secure the sides of the hound on the axle. The rear curved portion of the hound is provided with a curved wear-block i, which is disposed in the angle thereof, is secured in place by the l bolts 7c, and bears on the reach Z. A hound thus constructed is exceedingly strong and simple, is light, cheap, and extremely durable, and is entirely efficient in operation.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood Without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined by the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with an axle, a reach and a tongue, a hound comprising a semicircular portion, inwardly-converging side portions and forwardly-extending parallel extensions of said side portions, said side portions bearing on the axle, said semicircular portion bearing on the reach, said hound being made of L-angle metal with the webs thereof uppermost and outermost to form hollows in the inner under sides of the hound, blocks in the angles of the side portions and bearing on the axle, a curved wear-block in the angle of the semicircular portion and bearing on the reach, the said tongue being disposed in the angles between the parallel extensions of the converging side portions, and a bar secured transversely on the rear portion of the tongue and having its ends secured in the angles of the converging side portions, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
AUGUST H. FREITAG. Witnesses:
