To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH Z. DUCI-IARME, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alcide, in the county of Rolette, State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sleds; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to sleds, more particularly to devices of this character for hauling heavy loads, such as logs, timber, and the like, but which may be applied to sleds employed for various purposes, and has for one of its objects to improve the construction and increase the efliciency, utility and durability of devices of this character.
\Vith this and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features ofconstruction as hereafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment'of the invention, Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of one of the improved sleds constructed according to the invention. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the knee members attached to its runner. Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a portion of the beam with the improvement applied. Fig. 5 is a view of the blank from which the combined wear plate and holding plate is constructed. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the wear plates, detached.
The improved device comprises in general two runners 1011, generally formed of wood with the usual shoes 12-13 and with the roller or tongue beam 14 mounted to swing between the forward ends of the runners, the roller member having a hound device 15 to receive the reach 16. The hound member 15 is formed with a longitudinal guideway to receive the reach 16. Secured upon the hound 15 is a plate 17 having ears 18-19 to receive the inner ends of brace rods 2021, the outer ends of the latter connected to the roller member 14. The plate 17 is also provided with laterally projecting portions 22 bent around the outer edges of the hound member and beneath the same, the'portions of the projections 22 beneath the hounds arranged to support carrier It will be understood that two of the sled devices will be employed, one having adraft tongue applied to its roller 14 and the other sled member having the hounds 15 applied thereto, the reach 16 thus extending between the sleds, and by adjusting the reach 16 longitudinally the distance may be adjusted as required.
Each of the runners is provided with a knee structure and as the knees are precisely alike, a descriptionof one will suffice for all. Each knee consist-s of a central standard portion 26 and laterally extending side portions 2728, and each knee is provided with a transverse socket. Formed in the confronting faces of the sockets are vertical seats or cavities 2980, and formed through the upper portions of the members 2728 are apertures communicating with the seats, as shown.
The beam member of the sled is represented at 31 and extends at its ends through thesockets. Each beam is provided with a wear plate 32 to bear upon the material of the knee within the socket, and with its ends provided with downturned ribs 3334 to bear against the side faces of the knee, and thus effectually prevent lateral movement between the beam and the knees, while at the same time preventing undue friction and wear between the parts. Attached to each side of the beam at its ends is a combined wear and holding plate, and as the holding plates are precisely alike a description of one will suffice for all. Each plate is formed from a single strip of plate metal represented at 35, and is formed with a central rib 36 fitting in the seats 2930, and each plate is likewise formed with laterally directed ears 37 bearing upon opposite sides of the knee member adjacent to the socket.
Projecting from the plate 35 at one end is another ear 38, and projecting from the opposite end of the plate 35 is an ear 39, the ears 3839 extending in longitudinal alinement with the body of the plate. The outer end of the ear 39 is bent at right angles thereto, as shown at 40. One of the plates 35 with its projecting ears will be attached to the beam at opposite sides thereof, and at its opposite ends by bolts or rivets 41 with the projections 4:0 of the ears 39 bearing against the ends of the beam. By this means the plates 35 will be firmly secured in position upon the beam and form an effectual combined wear and holding plate between the beam and the knee, the ribs 36 and the ears 37 preventing lateral movement of the knees relative to the beam, while the ears 38-39 provide means for the reception of the holding bolts or rivets, while the projections 40 add materially to the strength of the connection between the parts, and relieve the rivets or bolts largely from strain.
Formed in the upper face of the beam 31 opposite the ribs 36 and likewise opposite the apertures in the knees is a recess 42, and passing through each opposite pair of the apertures and its alining recess is a pin 43. The pins 43 are each preferably provided with a head l4 at one end and an aperture at the other end to receive a cotter pin 45, to hold them in position relative to the beam and knee.
By this means it will be obvious that a strong, durable and effic'ient device is produced, which may be inexpensively manufactured and applied. The combined wear plates and connecting members when worn or broken may be readily replaced without discarding the remainder of the sled, and effectually prevent undue friction or wear between the wooden beam and the knees, as will be obvious.
The knee portions of the device may be constructed of any required size and may be of cast or malleable iron, or of cast steel as preferred.
The upper portions of the vertical. ribs 36 of the wear plates 35 are provided with depressions represented at 47 opposite the recess 42 of the beam, to receive the bolts 43, and thus assist in maintaining them in position, and relieving the material of the beam from lateral wear.
What is claimed, is
1. In a sled the combination with the runners, of knees connected to the runners and provided with transverse beam sockets, said sockets having vertical seats in their confronting faces, a beam bearing in said sockets, and combined wearing and holding plates each formed from a single plate and located between the beam and knee, each plate having a rib bent therein and engaging in the adjacent socket seat and with ears bent laterally from the plate at the ends and bearing respectively against the opposite faces of the knees.
2. In a sled the combination with the runners, of knees connected to the runners and provided with transverse beam sockets, said sockets having vertical seats in their confronting faces, a beam bearing in said sockets, combined wearing and holding plates each formed from a single plate and located between the beam and knee, each plate having a rib bent therein and engaging in the adjacent socket seat and with a plurality of ears at the ends, two of said ears directed laterally and bearing against the opposite faces of the knees and the remaining ears bearing against the beam, and means for securing the last mentioned ears to the beam.
3. In a sled the combination with the runners, of knees connected to the runners and provided with transverse beam sockets, said sockets having vertical seats in their confronting faces and with transverse apertures communicating through the seats, a beam bearing in said sockets and provided with transverse recesses opposite said knee apertures, pins extending through said recesses and apertures, and combined wearing and holding plates each formed from a single plate and located between the beam and knee, each plate having a rib bent therein and engaging in the adjacent socket seat and with ears bent laterally from the plate at the ends and bearing respectively against the opposite faces of the knees.-
