FIFTH-WHEEL FOR VEHICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 407,984, dated July 30, 1889. Application filed August 17, 1888. Serial No. 282,992. (No model.) Patented in Canada April 5, 1888, No. 28,818.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES VVOODS, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Strathroy, in the county of Middlesex and Province of Ontario, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriage-Circles, (for which I have obtained Letters Patent in the Dominion of Canada, No. 28,818, dated April 5,1888;) and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention consists in the construction and combination of parts in a carriage-circle, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanyingdrawings of myinvention, Figure 1 is an end View; Fig. 2, a side view. Fig. 3 shows the top circle and bottom plate. Fig. 4 is a separate view of the top circle shown on under side. Fig. 5 is a separate view of the bottom plate, shown on top.
A F is the upper circle, and B the bottom plate centered by a thimble on bottom plate and socket in top circle, through which a bolt to passes. The top circle thus moves circularly upon the bottom plate, and the two parts are held firmly together by-the reach-brace or reach-iron attached to top circle in front and rear, as will be presently described. Other suitable long bolts or tie-rods and nuts connect these parts in place and attach them to head-block O, head-piece D, and axle E of vehicle.
The construction of the top circle and bottom plate is clearly shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5.
F is the circle springing outward in front of the top circle-plate A. The extended bearing ends (I d, from the junction of circle F to the extremities 0, match with similar extended bearing ends 6 of bottom plate B, and. afford much greater bearing-space than heretofore and prevent all rattling or unsteadiness of the vehicle If the extension ends or arcs c of the top circle run off the extension ends or arcs b of bottom plate, there is still sufficient bearing, as the circle F then plays upon the extended ends 0 of the bottom plate B.
G is the reach; H, the top reach-iron, and H the bottom reach-iron. The top reachi ron H is usually made to connect directly to the top-circle plate, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3,
but the top circle may be used without the reach-iron being attached-to it, in which case it will be attached to the head-block directly. The bottom reach-iron H is attached to the front of "circle Fby means of its threaded end 5 5 passing through orifice in said circle and secured by nuts f f on top and bottom of circle.
These nuts can be tightened from time to time when the bottom reach-iron becomes loose through wear. low by a loose pin g and nut h, which may be changed when required. The gearing is thus held firmly together without any bolt passing through the head-block.
It will be seen that the top-circle plate has a bearing usually during the greater part of its surface upon the corresponding face of the bottom plate, and in no case passes beyond the area of bearing, the circle F affording an ample bearing at such times as the ends 0 have passed beyond the ends 19 of bottom plate, as already described, the result being greater steadiness and the prevention of rattling of the parts and all undue wear of the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim .as new is The combination, with the head-block, bed piece, axle, and reach, of the top circle A F,
provided with extended bearin gs cl d and arcs c c, and the bottom plate B, provided with extended bearings e c and arcs b b, substantially as described.
