UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
'WILLIAM S. WARD, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
RUNN|NGGEAR FOR VEHICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 261,572, dated July 25, 1882.
Application filed May 31, 1882.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. WARD, of the city of Newark, county of Essex, in the State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Running-Gear of Vehicles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof Figure 1 being a top view of the forward axle and bolster and a portion of the reach of a vehicle containing my invention, and Fig. 2 being a cross-section of same on. line 3 y, Fig. 1.
My invention relates to the connection of the reach with the axle and bolster; and it consists in the devices herein described and claimed whereby such connection is made.
A represents the axle, B the bolster, and (l the reach. D represents a brace bolted at the forward end to the front side of the bolster, extending down around under the axle and reach, as shown in Fig. 2. So far as thus described the devices are old.
My invention relates to the brace E, its combination with the bolster, the brace D, and the reach, and the double office performed by it, the said brace E being shown plainly in Fig. 2. This brace is secured at its upper end to the rear side of the bolster B, then is bent directly down a short distance from the bolster, and the lower end passes through the reach 0, near its extreme front end, and through the straight arm D of the brace D, which lies (No model.)
under the reach. It is provided with a collar or shoulder, a, that fits down upon the upper face of the reach, and with a screw and nut, b, at the lower end, by means of which shoulder and screw and not the arm D of the brace D and the reach 0 are bolted together. This device E therefore serves the double office of a brace operating in connection with the brace D to support the bolster on the axle, and also as a. bolt to bolt together the reach (3 and arm D. Preferably the reach is strengthened by an iron strap, F, laid upon the top face of the reach and bolted to it, the said brace E also serving the purpose of a boltto bolt the forward end of said strap fast to the reach.-
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, in the running-gear of a vehicle, of the axle A, the bolster B, the brace D, and the reach 0 with the brace E, provided with a shoulder, a, and screw'and nut b, and secured at the upper end to the bolster, the lower end passing through the reach and the arm'rD of the said brace, thereby bolting them together, as and for the purpose described.
In witness whereof I hereto set my hand this 27th day of May, 1882.
WILLIAM S. WARD.
In presence of- A. G. N.VEEM1LYE, G. W. BEEBEE.
