SAMUEL GRAHAM, OF LEBECK, MISSOURI.
VEHICLE-STANDARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 4 25,070, dated April 8, 1890.
Application filed February 18,1890. Serial No. 340,863. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known thatI, SAMUEL GRAHAM, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Lebeck, in the county of Cedar and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle Standard Keys, of which the followingis a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an adjustable key for securing avehicle-standard to the bolster, and particularly that class of standards shown and described in my former patent, No. 416,910.
My object is to produce means whereby a vehiclestandard can be adjustably and at the same time securely fixed on the bolster end.
WVith this end in view my invention consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combinations of parts more fully described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my complete arrangement of parts, Fig. 2, a bottom view, and Fig. 3 a detail view, of the key. The reference-letter B indicates the bolster end, and A the standard, preferably of the form shown in my prior patent before mentioned, having an encircling-band 0 arranged to loosely surroundthe said bolster. The bolster is provided with the usual beveled lower surface a, and between this surface and the band 0 is inserted the key D. This key consists of a metallic plate, wedge-shaped in longitudinal section or elevation andv having a width equal to that of the inside of the band C.
, The inner end of the key is bifurcated to form a pair of arms 0 and a longitudinal open slot 6 between them, and projecting spurs or lugs 01 are formed on the inner ends of said arms. The arms 0 are also serrated or provided with teeth f 011 their under surfaces, as seen more clearly in Fig. 3.
Through the bolster behind the standard extends a vertical bolt E, which also engages the slot 0, and is provided on its lower end with a nut g and washer h between the latter and the plain surface of the plate D.
The preferred construction of my device having been set forth, I will now proceed to describe the mode of application of the same. The key is first placed in the band C to rest upon the lower wall of the same, with the spurs d projecting from its inside edge. The standard is now placed on the bolster and set at the desired adjustment or distance from the outer extremity of said bolster. The key will next be driven home until itis tightly wedged between the band C and the bolster, the arms 0 passing on either side of the bolt E, which has been previously driven through the bolster. The nut g is then screwed up as tight as possible on the bolt, and the teeth f in the upper surface of the arms 0, will be forced into the wood of the bolster, and the keythus rigidly clamped to the latter. standard has been thus secured, it will be seen that it will maintain a perpendicular position in relation to the bolster as the taper of the surfaces of the wedge or key 0 corresponds to that of the under side a of the bolster, and thus the lower face of the key and the upper surface of said bolster will be parallel and hold the standard at right angles to them.
It will be readily seen that the standard can be adjusted to any position 011 the bolster between the end of the latter and the bolt 9 and locked at any point, and also that the lugs at will prevent the removalof the keywithout the standard. It can be easily adjusted to suit a narrow or wide tread vehicle, and also fitted to a key or other frame. It can be removed entirely, if desired, and can also be changed to suit the swelling or shrinkage of the wagon-bed.
It is evident that my device might be varied in many slight ways which might suggest themselves to a mechanical mind, and hence I do not limit myself to the exact construction herein shown.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters. Patent, isi 1. The combination of the bolster, the standard, and a wedge inserted between them, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. A key arranged to be inserted between When the the standard and bolster, and consisting of a wedge-shaped plate provided with an adj ustment-slot, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the bolster, the standard provided with a band encircling the latter, a key inserted between said band and said bolster and provided with a slot, and a bolt extending through said bolster and said slot, substantially as described.
t. A key inserted between the standard and ARTHUR W. ORR, (3120. N. JoNEs.
