Description

`P. HAYDEN.
Improvement in Nut and Bolt Fastengs.
N0. 131,755. Patented Oct. t, 1872.

t nxrsenor PATENT OFFICE.
EETEE EAYEEN, or ALLEGEENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
`IMPRVEMENT IN NUT AND BOLT FASTENINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l31,755,`dated October 1, 1872.`
. To all `whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, PETER HAYDEN, of Allegheny city, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Device for Locking Nuts; and do hereby declare that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying plate of drawing, hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact speciication, wherein are set forth the nature and principles of the invention, by which the same may be distinguished from others of a similar class, together with such parts thereof as are claimed as new, and are desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States.
Myinvention relates to that class of devices which are made use of for locking nuts in position; and the nature thereof consists in certain improvements inthe construction of the same, as hereinafter described and shown. j
In the accompanyin g plate of drawin g,which illustrates my invention `and forms a part of the specification thereof, Figure I shows the position of the lock and nut before being locked; Fig. 2 shows the position of the nut when locked, and also the manner in which the lock is held in place; Fig. ,3 shows the form of the lock when made of greater Weight and Fig. 4 shows the form of the lock when `made of sheet metal.
In the drawing referred to, which represents the application of the lock to the bolts and nuts used in railroad rail-couplings, letter A designates the rail, and B the, lish-bar used for coupling the rail's. The screw-bolt G passes through the said sll-bar and one similar to it on the opposite side of the rail andis se-v cured by the nut D.
In order to lock the nut in position, by
` means of the .open square nut-lock E, the
said nut is first screwed up tight and` square with the rail. The said lock E is then thrown over the nut close against the fish-bar and its lower side resting on the foot of the rail,
y which prevents the lock from revolving. The
nut is then turned back, its corners passing over the thin part of the lock until they come against the shoulders or projections of the lock, and are'thus brought to a positive stop and at the same time hold the lock in position, the corners of the nut lapping over the sides of the lock. When it is necessary to remove the lock the nut is turned forward until it is square with the rail and then the lock can be removed with facility.
The lock is merely an open square, with suitable projections on its sides, and it may be made six-sided or hexagon shaped to suit nuts of that kind. Itmay vary slightly in form to suit the modes of manufacture. It can be made' of malleable cast-iron or from sheetiron, cut and stamped, by suitable presses, in the form shown in Fig. 4. When made of cast-iron it may be made heavy, as in Fig. 3.
This lock is not designed to be conined to rail-couplings merely, but can be used on all kinds of machinery where bolts and nuts are used, or can be applied to the heads of bolts when nuts are notused, especially to the caps of journals, and all parts Where there is much vibration; all that is necessary in applying it to machinery is to have a suitable projection on one side to prevent the lock from turning back. A
Having thus described the construction and operation of my invention, I will state what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
The open square nut-lock E, shaped inside as described so as to fit loosely over the nut, and having suitable shoulders or projections on its sides for the purpose of locking the nut when the nut is turned back until its corners lap over the sides of the lock and hold it inposition, as shown' and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 27th day of J une, `1872.
PETER HAYDEN.
