ATTO R N EY S NPETERS, PHOTD LITHOGRAPHEI WASHINGTON D c UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
JAMES M. KENT, OF CURTIS, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN NUT-LOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,113, dated July 27, 1875; application filed June 19, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. KENT, of Curtis, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Lock-Nuts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a side elevation of my lock-nut; and Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 5 are detail views of the same.
My invention relates to nut-locks; and consists in the novel construction and arrangement of a serrated ring, adapted for engagement with like serrations on a nut, as hereinafter described, and removable only by cutting, as is also hereinafter fully set forth.
A of the drawings represents a bolt, upon which is formed, in the usual manner,'both right and left threads, as shown on Fig. l. B represents a nut, upon one side of which is formed teeth or serrations, marked a. 0 represents a ring, having teeth or serrations adapted to engage with the teeth a in the manner shown on Fig. 1; and c is an elastic washer, arranged upon the bolt between the ring 0 and the grooved nut, next mentioned. D represents a nut adapted to work upon the bolt A by means of an ordinary wrench, and when on duty is pressed closely againstthe washer 0, thereby holding the ring 0 and the nut B closely together. Upon two sides of this nut B I form grooves, marked 1, which are fully illustrated 011 Fig. 2 of the drawings. The object of these grooves is to provide means of access to each side of the ring 0, and, by means of a cold-chisel, out the same in two pieces, when desirable.
It is obvious that when the ring 0 is pressed closely against the nut B, the form of the boltthrcads will keep it rigidly in position, and hence'removal or disengagement is impossible, (or nearly so, except by the destruction of the ring. This is readily accomplished by seven ing said ring in the manner above mentioned.
The manner of connecting ring 0 with nut D is illustrated in Fig. 4. It consists in forming upon the side of said nut a quadrangular projection, marked G, adapted to receive the ring, the center of which is likewise quadrangular, and of a size adapted to said projection.
What I claim as new,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The nut lock described, having doublethreaded bolt A, ring 0, washer c, and nuts B and D, the latter of which is provided with grooves 3 for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES M. KENT.
