WILLIAM B. U. HERSHEY, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
BHACE-lRON FOR VEHICLE-SEATS...
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 784,160, dated March "7, 1905.
Application filed July 22, 1904. Serial No. 217,652.
To (1/7] 11/71/0171, it may concern:
Be it known that I,'WILLTAM P. C. HERsHEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at C0- lumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Brace-Irons, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful im 'irovement in brace-irons for vehicle-seat supports.
The object of the invention is to provide a superior construction whereby the parts are rigidly held in place and by which the seatsupport is braced against strains.
Another object resides in providing a device of the character described that will be strong, durable, eflicient, and simple and comparatively inexpensive to make and one in which the several parts will not be liable to get out of working order.
With the above and other objects in View the invention consists of the novel details of construction and operation, a preferable embodiment of which is described in the specification, and illustrated in the d rawings, wherein Figure 1 is a partial perspective view of a vehicle-body and the seat-support thereof. Fig. 2 is an inner elevation of one of the brace irons, and Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the same.
In the drawings the bottom of the vehiclebody is indicated by the numeral 1, while 2 designates the side-board, and 3 the sill. Extending upwardly from the sill in contact With the side-board are vertical posts 4,from which extend laterally the frame-bars 5. Of course it is to be understood that the construction about to be described is applied to each side of the body, being connected by the framebars 5, and therefore a description of one side will sufiice for both.
The posts 4: are formed with shoulders at their upper ends, into which is set the curved side block 6 and the stretcher-strip 7. The brace-irons 8, which constitute the essential parts of my invention, are formed with a D- shaped loop member 9, suitably provided. with bolt-recehing apertures 10. The irons are formed on their inner faces with vertical extending ribs 11, from which point the iron is curved and provided with a later-ally-extemling leaf 12.
in applying the irons the loop member 9 is secured to the outer face of the bar 5 by means of bolts M and which is recessed at 13 to receive the rib .11. The curved portion 15 of the iron is so shaped as to closely contact with the round edge of the post a on its inner face and disposed so that its leaf portion 12 lies flush with the ends of the stretcherstrip 7 and the block 6. Screws 16 pass through the curved portion 15 of the iron and securely fasten it to the post. As an additional means of securing the irons on each side of the frame-bars in place and also for the purpose of strengthening and firmly so curing the parts together a tie-bolt 17 is passed through the apertures 18 of the leaf 12 and also through the posts 4 and extended under the stretcher-strip 7. The ends of the bolt are headed or offset, so as to rigidly connect the various parts through which it passes and also to hold the leaf portions and the curved portions 15 in close contact with the posts, stretcher-strip, and block.
It will be readily seen that when the vari-- ous parts are secured and braced by the irons and the tie-bolt they are rigidly connected and present a lirm and steady support in which there is no liability of the parts rattling or becoming disengaged. The brace-irons besides greatly strengthening and bracing the parts simplify the construction and materially add to the neat and compact appearance and arrangement of the support.
Having now fully described my invention, what 1 claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A brace-iron for vehicle-seat supports, comprisinga loop member, and a leaf portion extended from the loop member.
2. A brace-iron for vehicle-seat supports comprising, a loop member, a leaf portion, a curved portion connecting the loop andthe leaf, and a rib formed on the side of the iron.
The combination with a seat-support for vehicles having frame-bars and vertical posts, of brace-irons arranged in pairs for connecting the parts, and continuous means for securing each pair of irons and the parts to gether.
