UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES M. MONTGOMERY, JR, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
FOLDlNG BEDSTEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 354,729, dated December 21, 1886.
Application filed June 7, 1886. Serial No. 204.368.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES M. MONTGOMERY, Jr., a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Bedsteads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a folding bedstead provided with my improved pivotal bracket, showing the bed folded up. Fig.2 is a similar view showing the bed unfolded. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of the casing of the bed and of the bedframe; and Fig. dis a perspective detail yiew of the arm or bracket and of the pivot.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to that class of folding beds in which the bed-frame is folded up within a casing; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the back of the outer casing, and B indicates the side pieces or rails of the bedframe, and C O the side pieces of the casing. The side pieces or rails of the bed-frame fit with their inner ends between the side-pieces of the casing. An arm or bracket, D, is secured to the inner side. of each of the side pieces of the casing, and consists of a plate, E, having perforations for the reception of fastening-screws F, which secure the bracket to the side piece. The arm is bulged out from the plate and bent downward, the said bulge leaving a sufficient space between the arm and the side piece of the casing to allow the side rail of the bed-frame to slip between them, and the arm is inclined forward, and has an upwardly-pointing hook, G, at its outer end, forming an upwardlyopening bearing for a pivotal bolt, H, projecting at the inner side of the side rail of the bed-frameand resting in 7 the wider portions of the side pieces.
(No model.)
the bearing. This bolt has a flat head, I, provided with perforations J for the passage of fastening-s'c'rews,and the bolt is passed through a perforation in the side rail, and has the head secured to the outer side of Y the side rail, the head being preferably countersunk in the said outer side. By constructing the bracket in this manner the fulcrum for the bed-frame will be placed near the forward edge of the lower projecting portions of the side pieces of the casing, while the strain upon the side. pieces will be thrown upon and distributed across the main portions thereof, thus avoiding any possibility of their being split by the screws which secure said brackets to them, and
at the same time will be near the middles and rear edges of the enlarged portions of the said side pieces,so that the securing of the brackets and the splitting strain of the fastening-screws for the bracket will fall upon the portions of the side pieces which extend upward, preventing them from having a tendency to split The pivotal bolts being inserted through the side rails of the bed-frame, and having their heads countersunk and secured at the outer sides of the side rails, will be very firmly secured, and will not be liable to break or to become loosened, the strain of the weight of the bed-frame falling in the perforation in the side rail, and
not upon the fastening-screws, which simply serve to prevent dislocation of the bolts.
By having the pivotal bolts projecting upon the inner sides of the side rails, and having the brackets projecting over the upper edges of the rails and upon the inner sides of the same, the rails will be prevented from having any lateral play, keeping the rails of the frame true when the bed-frame is folded up or down.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1.- In a folding bed, the combination of the side rails of the bed-frame having perforations countersunk at the outer sides of the rails, pivotal bolts inserted through the perforations, and havingtheir fiat heads secured in the countersinks, and arms secured to the side pieces of the bed-casing and projecting over the side rails, and having bearings at their 100 ends for the bo1ts,as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. In a folding bed, the combination of the side rails of the bed-frame having bolts pro- 5' jecting from their inner sides with arms or brackets secured to the inner sides of the side pieces of the casing and projecting over the side rails, and having bearings at their ends for the pivotal bolts, as and for the purpose :0 shown and set forth.
3. In afolding-bed, the combination of the side rails of the bed-frame having pivotal bolts projecting from their inner sides with brackets consisting of plates secured to the inner sides I 5 of the side pieces of the bed-casing, and having arms projecting from the lower edges bulged over the side rails and projecting downward and forward, having upwardlyprojecting JAMES M.
