BEDSTEAD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 22, 1921.
Application filed May 21, 1920. Serial No. 383,130.
` metal beds, and has reference more particularly to the corner-fastenings by which the side members of the bedstead are detachably connected with the head and'foot frames. The corner-posts of the head and foot frames, in the employment of my invention, are hollow and tubular in crosssection, and the side members of the bedstead each comprises a vertical plate having tubular members on its upper and lower edges and ends, and my invention provides means whereby lin an efficient manner side members of the character employed by me may, Without marring the appearance of the bedstead, be connected with the tubular corner-posts of the head and foot frames. My invention therefore resides in a novel construction and cooperative relation of features carried by the ends of the side members of t-he bedstead with features connected with the corner-posts of the head and foot frames, and the invention will be fully understood from the detailed description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a Side elevation, partly in vertical section and partly broken away, of one end portion of ,a metal bedstead constructed in accordance with and embodying my invention, Fig. 1 illustrating the end of one of the side `members of the bedstead in interlocking engagement with the adjacent corner post of a head frame;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through a portion `of the same, taken on the dotted line 2 2 of Fig. 1; y

Fig. 4: is an inner face view of a portion of the corner-post, the latter being partly.
broken away, and Fig. 4 indicating more particularly a metal plate which is secured by spot welding or otherwise against the face of said post;
Fig. 5 is an elevation of face view of a plate I` secure to the side member of the bedstead and carrying locking hooks for introduction through the slots shown in the plate illustrated in Fig. 4;
Fig. 6 is a side elevation, partly broken away, of one of the side members of the bedstead;
Fig. 7 is a perspective view, partly broken away, illustrating in contiguous relation all of the mechanical parts -to be assembled in `the completion of the side frames of the bedstead and particularly at the ends of said frames or members;
Fig. 8 is a detached perspective View, looking at the inner side thereof, of one of the caps which I apply to the upper and lower tubular members of the side frame of the bedstead and which receive, in vertical slots therein, the inner ends of the securing hooks, the cap shown in Fig. 8 being that illustrated in a different position at the upper portion of Fig. Z 5
Fig. 9 is a vertical section through a modied construction of side frame, the modification consisting merely in the employment of rectangular upper and lower horizontal tubular members` on the side Fig. 10 is a corresponding view of a further modification of side frame, this modification residing in the employment of elliptical tubular members at the upper and lower edges of the side frame in lieu of eitherV cylindrical or polygonal members such as shown in Figs. 7 and 9.
The constructions at the four corners of the bedstead are identical with each other and each is of the character shown in the accompanying drawings showing` the details of manufacture as applied to one corner of the bedstead frame.
In the drawings, referring to Figs. 1 to 8 inclusive, 15 designates a tubular corner post of a head frame, and 16 the end portion of a side fra-me of a bedstead. The corner-post 15 is shown, in the present instance,'as being square in cross-section and in its inner side, indicated at 17, is formed with two vertical slots 18, one being below the other and to be utilized in connection with the means for securing the side frame to the end frame of the bedstead. On the `outer surface of the side 17 of the corner-post 19. The corner-post 15 is therefore hollow or'tubular yandformed in its side 17 with the slots-18 and said post has secured to the outer andinner surfaces of saidside 17, so as to be substantially integral therewith, the corresponding vertical plates 19,
21, which are of substantial thickness, be-
ing thicker than the side 17 of the cornerpost and not only adding adequate strength and resisting power to the corner-post, but serving'therewith to support the end of the `Yside member or frame 16 of the bedstead.
The four corner-posts of the bedstead will all be constructed the same as the corner-post 15, each having the slots 18 and registering slotted plates 19, 21.
'.The `side-frame '16 is illustrated on a reduced scale in Fig. 6, andthe details thereof are shown on a larger scale in Figs. 1 and 7. Each side frame 16 is formed of an elongated plate 23 extending between a head post and a footpost and having along its upper and lower edges split tubes 24, said tubes being split, as indicated at 25, and passed upon the horizontal edges of the plate 23 until said edges engage the outer solid surfaces of the bores'of the tubes 24, as indicated in Fig. 1 and also in Figs. 9 and 10. The plate 23 is continuous from end to end of the bedstead, and the upper .and lower tubular mountings 24 are likewise continuous and l not only serveto conceal the horizontal edges of the plate 2 3, but strengthen said edges and the side'frame A16 in general and in addition-add avery desirable finish to said frame 16. The end portions of the frame 16 'are equipped with features embodying my invention and to cooperate with the corner postsforsecuring the members of the bedstead together.' vrUpon each vertical end edge vof the plate 23 I' apply a split tube 26,
' said'tube being open at one side, as at 27 (Fig. 7), and passed inwardly upon the end of the plate'23 until the vertical edge of said plate becomes engaged with the inner outer vertical surface of thebore of the tube 26, asindicated in Fig. 1, said tube 26 thus concealing and strengthening the end of the Y plate 23 and adding a very desirable finish to the side frame of the bedstead. The tube 26 lits asI snugly as may be convenient between facing 'end portions of the upper and lower tubes 24, so that in conjunction with said tubes 24 all of the edges of the plate 23 may be effectually concealed and strengthened and a panel effect be given to the side frame 16. The corner fastening means which I apply to each end of the end Ylralne 16 comprises a vertical plate 28, caps 29 and plate hooks 30, and these parts 28, 29, 3() are, prior to the assembly of the bed parts, secured together so as to be handled as a unit. and as such applied to each end of each side frame 16. The vertical plate 28 is formed with openings or slots 31, and these openings or slots are adapted to register with slots 32 formed in the outer faces olthe metal caps 29, these caps being closed at their outer ends, except at the slots 32, and at their facing sides being slotted, as at 33 (Fig. The plate hooks 3() are formed at their inner edges with projecting lingers 34 and with abutting surfaces 35, and said lingers 34 are adapted for insertion through the slots 31 of the plate 2S and the registering slots 32 of the caps 29, while during such application of the hooks to the plate 28 and c aps 29, the abutment shoulders or surfaces 35 engage lthe outer face of the plate 28. After the fingers 34 of the plate hooks 3() are inserted through the slots 3l, 32, the inner ends of said fingers are upset or spread so as to form heads thereon engaging the inner faces of the outer ends of the caps 29 and thereby permanently connecting said hooks, plate 28 and caps 29. After the hooks 30, plate 28 and caps 29 have been assembled, they may be applied to the end of the side frame 16, and in this application of said features to the side frame, the caps 29 are slipped upon the upper and lower tubular members 24, the slots 33 in the facing sides of said caps slipping upon the plate 23 and the caps themselves closely fitting upon the tubular members 24 to which they are secured by spot welding or otherwise. vhen the end fastening members are applied to the side frame 16, the vertical plate 28 is moved directly against the outer vertical edge of the tube 26, as shown in Fig. 1 'and hence when all the parts at the end of the side frame 16 are properly assembled, `said end becomes of proper finish as well as of proper strength for the uses to which my invention is designed. After the ends of the fastening devices represented by the plates 28, caps 29 and'hooks 30 have been applied to the end of the side frame 16, said side frame may be readily connected with the corner post 15, as shown in Fig. 1. 'The outer ends of the plate hooks 30 may be extended through the slots 18, 2() and 22 of the corner post, and then upon the lowering of the side frame 16 said hooks rest upon the metal at the lower ends of said slots and lap upon the inner surface of the plate 21, as shown in Fig. 1,'thereby securely connecting the side frame with the corner-post.
My invention has to do with the construction of the side frames and corner-posts and .llO
more particularly with means for suitably connecting said side frames with said posts. The invention is useful more particularly in metal bedsteads, and in the drawings I illustrate the same as embodied in a metal bedstead, it being the purpose not only to provide secure corner fastening means but to improve the construction of the bedstead so that in the application of corner fastening means thereto the bed may be strengthened and its appearance improved.
The upper and lower tubular members 24 on the side plate 23 may be of such crosssection as may be preferred, and hence I do not limit the invention to the employment of cylindrical tubing 24 on the edges of the side plate 23. In Fig. 9 I illustrate the side plate 23 as having rectangular tubing 36 thereon, and in Fig. 10 I illustrate elliptical tubing 37 as applied to the upper and lower edges of the side plate 23. The tubing 36, 37 will be employed in the same manner, illustrated in Fig. 6, as the tubing 24, but will modify the appearance of the bedstead to suit individual requirements. I do not in every instance limit my invention to the vertical slotted end tubes 26, since in some cases said tubes will be omitted and the face plates 28 brought up flush against the vertical edges of the plate 23, but preferably the tubes 26 will be made use of, since they add materially to the completeness and finish of the bed.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. In a bedstead, in combination, a tubular corner-post having slots in its inner vertical side and inner and outer plates. fastened against said side and having slots registering with the said slots therein, and a side-frame for connection with said cornerpost comprising a vertical plate, tubes on and covering the horizontal edges of said plate, caps applied on the ends of said tubes, a face-plate applied against the outer ends of said caps and plate-hooks having shoulders to abut against said face-plate and fingers extended through said face plate and the outer ends of said caps and headed within said caps, said plate-hooks being adapted to enter the slots of the corner post and its said plates and interlock with said post.
2. In a bedstead, in combination, a cornerpost, and a side-frame for connection therewith comprising a vertical plate, slotted tubes receiving and extending along the horizontal edges of said plate and internally bearing against said edges, slotted tubes receiving the vertical edges of said plate, slotted caps applied on said horizontal tubes and adjacent portions of said plate, a face plate applied against the outer ends of said caps and plate-hooks having shoulders to abut against said face-plate and ngers eX- tended through said face plate and the outer ends of said caps and fastened within said caps, said corner post having upper and lower slots adapted to receive and interlock with said plate-hooks.
3. In a bedstead, in combination, a tubular corner-post having slots in its inner vertical side and inner and outer plates fastened against said side and having slots registering with the said slots therein, and a sideframe for connection with said corner-post comprising a vertical plate, tubes on and covering the horizontal edges of said plate and at their inner surfaces bearing against said edges, slotted vertical tubes on the ends of said plate and extending between said horizontal tubes and a face-plate connected with the ends of said horizontal tubes and carrying plate-hooks, said plate-hooks being adapted to enter the slots of the corner-post and its said plates and interlock with said ost.
Signed at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 18th day of May A. D. 1920.
