One of its primary objectsis the construction of a metal bed or attractive appearance which attained in part by providing panel members for the head and foot sections and securlng each of said panel members firmly in position in a frame without riveting through the panel member.
The panel retaining frame members are of novel construction and improved means are employed for uniting the same, whereby a structure is obtained which has great mechanical strength and rigidity and is highly ornamental in appearance.
The invention also comprises improvements in the corner posts whereby the feet which rest upon the casters are very firmly united to the post but are readily detachable therefrom. The joint between the foot and 2 post is concealed and the members are of graceful form, one merging into the other and producing the effect of continuity. My invention also includes various other details of construction which will be pointed out and claimed.

In the structure illustrated the panel members are formed of sheets 1 preferably of me lthou h s sus r e e mater a s an united to a frame of sheet metal bent as shown in Figs. 5, 7 and'S) to form upper, lower and side channels 2, each of which has a concave web and flanges in engagement with the edge portion of the sheet 1. The ends of said channels may be united to each other. The two panels for the head and foot pieces, respectively, are preferably identical in size and shape, although they may differif desired.
The head-piece frame for receiving and holding the panel comprises the two post members 3, .3 which are preferably formed with a vertical portion having aninwardly opening channel 4: (Fig. 5) the walls of which are grooved so as to be provided with a pair of interior shoulders 5, 5. These shoud ers are so placed as to form an abutment for the panel frame channel 2 and the space between the wallsof the channel 4 is such as to provide for a close fit between the members 3 and 2, as shown. The upper end .6 offthe post member 3 extends inwardly and is adapted to enter and fit closely withinthe end ofthe tubular cross-piece 7, the parts being firmly united by any suitable securing means, for example, a rivet 8. The cross-section of the portion 6 is similar to that of the member 10 shown in Fig. 6, and at its base is a shoulder 7 or against which the end of the cross-piece u I..
The cross-piece 7. is a tube of sheet metal of any desired crossssection, the form which I prefer to employ being approximately rectan gular in section as shown in Fig. 3. The at tractive appearance of this member is in part obtained by forming the front and rear. walls with a curve as illustrated, and the top wall is shown as slightly convex. The lower wall or web of the member 7 is so bent as to form a groove or trough 9, the side walls of which are of double thickness, whereby the tubular member is greatly reinforced against distortion by flexure. The groove 9 is of substantial width and forms a flat. bearing surface for the upper member 2 of the panel frame, the width of said groove being just sufficient to enable it to receive said frame, whereby the latter is fin y he d The lower portion of the side or corner post member 3 terminates in an extension 10 (Figs. 6 and 10) formed with four radial projections or ribs to engage within and support the four walls of the tubular member 13. At the base of said extension is a shoulder 34 against which the end of said tubular member abuts.
There is also an inward extension 11 of similar cross-section, the parts 3,10 and 11 forming a T. The extension 11 is tightly fitted within the end of a tubular cross member 12 similar in cross-section to the member 7. The end of the member 12 abuts against a shoulder 35 at the base of the extension 11. This tubular member is formed along its upper side, with a groove 9 similar to the groove of the member 7 and receives and firmly engages the lower member 2 of the panel frame. The member 12 is firmly united to the extension 11 by the rivet 8. The structure described forms a panel retaining frame consisting of two side members 3, 3 and upper and lower cross mem bers 7 and 12 firmly united at their ends by telescoping parts secured by rivets. The side members 3 of these panel retaining frames form a part of the corner posts of the bed. The parts necessary to complete the posts will now be described.
The posts for the head-piece comprise the above noted tubular members 13 which are preferably of the cross-section shown in Fig. 6, such section being substantially rectangular in form with slightly convex curvature. The upper end portion of this member 13 fits closely about the extension 10 and is secured thereto by a rivet 8. At the lower end of the tube 13 is a support 14 having a shoulder 15 upon which said tubular member 13 rests. The support 14 has an upper extension 16 which is provided with upper and lower threaded openings to receive the securing bolts 17. The lower end of the support 14 is formed with a conical surface 18 at the base of which is a groove 19 the bottom of which forms a supporting shoulder, and the interior of said support is cored as shown at 20.
The corner post is completed by a spindle tip or shank 21 having an upwardly flaring interior conical surface 22 and a central bore the lower portion 23 of which is adapted to receive the stem of the caster 24. The bottom of the bore 23 has an aperture 25 of reduced diameter for receiving the securing bolt 26 and the head of said bolt bears against the bottom of the bore. The upper end 27 of the bolt is threaded and engages a threaded socket at the top of the bore 20 of the support 14, whereby said bolt draws the conical surfaces 18 and 22 closely together and firmly unites them by a wedging action. The upper end of the member 21 abuts against the bottom of and is concealed within the groove 19 whereby the members 14 and 21 merge as shown in Fig. 3 and appear to be a single piece.
The corner posts for the foot-piece are similar to that described but differ therefrom in that the tubular members 13 are dispensed with and the support 14' (Fig. 9) is integral with the lower end of the channel member 3 so that the securing bolts 17 (Fig. 7) take into threaded openings formed in the body of the channel member 3. The corner posts 3 for the foot-piece are also provided with inward extensions 11 for the tubular cross member 12, as well as with the tips 21 secured by bolts 26 described.
The means for supporting the side rails 28 consist of angular brackets 29 secured to the posts 3 and 3 by the bolts 17 the angular cross bars 30 being also held by the uppermost of said bolts. The brackets 29 are provided with apertures 31 the upper portions of which are of sufficient size to receive the heads of the studs 32 which are rigid with brackets 32a secured to the rails 28 by rivets 33. The lower'parts of the openings 31 are reduced in size to lock the parts together as is well understood.
The lighter parts of the bed herein described are preferably formed of sheet metal brought to the desired shapes by suitable operations, and for the heavier parts die castings are preferably used. My invention is not limited, however, to the use of such materials. It will be noted that in a bed constructed in the manner described the various parts are very firmly united and the structure possesses great strength, and is able to withstand rough usage without any loosening of the joints. Strength and durability are therefore obtained without any sacrifice in the attractiveness of its appearance.
Having now described my invention what I claim is:
1. A head or foot piece for beds comprising side posts having inwardly opening channels and upper and lower inwardly extending integral projections, tubular cross members the ends of which receive said projections, longitudinal troughs in said cross members, and a panel member with its edges in engagement with said troughs and channels.
2. In a bed, an end piece comprising two corner posts having inwardly opening vertical channels, the side walls of which are provided with interior shoulders, upper and lower integral projections extending inwardly at an angle to said corner posts, the upper and lower projections of said'corner post having exterior shoulders, upper. and lower tubular cross members having longitudinal troughs therein fitted over said projections and abutting against the shoulders thereon, and a panel member having its edges in'said troughs and channels and abutting against the bottoms of the troughs and also abutting against the interiorshoulders of the channels. 1 r
3. In a bed, an end piece comprising two corner posts having inwardly opening vertical channels, the side walls of which are provided with interior shoulders, upper and lower integral projections extending inwardly at an angle to the corner posts, exterior shoulders on the upper projections of said corner posts, an arcuate tubular cross member having a longitudinal trough therein fitted over said upper projections and abutting against the shoulders thereon, a lower tubular cross member having a longitudinal trough therein fitted over said lower projections, and a panel member having its edges in said troughs and channels.

In a bed, an end piece comprising two corner posts having inwardly, opening vertical channels, the side walls of these channels having grooves therein which provide interior shoulders directed toward the channel side of the post, upper and lower projections rigid with and extending inwardly at an angle to the corner posts, these upper and lower projections having exterior shoulders provided thereon, an upper tubular cross member fitted over the said upper projections so as to abut against the shoulders thereon and having a downwardly opening longitudinal trough therein, a lower tubular cross member fitted over the said lower projections so as to abut against the shoulders thereon and having an upwardly opening longitudinal trough therein, a panel member, and a panel frame having a pair of inner panelholding flanges between which the edge portions of the panel are received and having an exterior web uniting the flanges and providing therewith angular corners which are fitted in the said troughs and channels so as to abut respectively against the bottoms of the troughs and against the said shoulders in the channels.

6. In a bed, an end piece comprising two corner posts, upper and lower projections rigid with and extending inwardly at an angle to the corner posts, these upper and lower projections having exterior shoulders provided thereon, an upper tubular cross member fitted over the said upper projecions to abut against the shoulders thereon, a lower tubular cross member fitted over the said lower projections to abut against the shoulders thereon, a rigid downward extension on the respective corner posts below the said lower projection and the said extension terminating upwardly in a downwardly directed exterior shoulder, and a Vertical member forming a downward continuation of the said post tubularly fitted over the said downward extension and at its upper end abutting against the said shoulder thereon.
