G. T. SEGAR.
BED BOTTOM.
No. 480,788. Patented Aug. 16, 1892.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARITIES T.SEGAR, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BED-BOTTOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 480,788, dated August 16, 1892.
Application filed February 15, 1892. Serial No. 421,528. (No model.)
. Chicago, in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed- Bottoms, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to bed-bottoms in.
which an elastic or woven wire fabric is stretched out and held by the end rails of the frame; and the object of my improvements is to provide a knockdown frame for bed-bottoms of this class whereby the longitudinal rail or rails can be readily detached, so that the fabric can be rolled on the end rails or folded for transportation or attached, and serve to stretch the fabric when erecting the bed-bottom for use. lhis object I attain by the frame constructed as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a bottom view of such bed-bottom containing my improvement. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a detail showing an enlarged cross-section of the end rail near the casting, by means of which the longitudinal rail is secured to one of the end rails, and also the means for applying the power to stretch the fabric.
In the drawings, A is the elastic or wovenwire fabric composing the bed-bottom, which is attached in the usual way to end rails B. The end rails are connected together-preferably by a single rod or bar 0, located at the center. Said bar is of uniform thickness throughout its length, so that it can slide through an opening 0 in a casting O, which is secured firmly to the under side of one of the end rails and enters a socket in a casting O on the under side of the other end rail. On one side of said bar is a head D, provided with an opening cl, through which a screwbolt E can pass and engage a threaded socket in the casting 0, whereby the end rail can be drawn toward the head D until the fabric is brought to the required tautness.
The rod or bar 0 is metallic and has sufficient play in the opening at c or in the socket of the casting C to allow the end rails to come in line with each other under the pull of the fabric as they are being spread apart by the power of screw-bolt E, applied, as shown, and operated by a wrench attached to the square head e. Said rod is straight when not applied to the bed-bottom and has sufficient elasticity to spring down below the fabric, as shown in the drawings, when under strain, and to resume its normal or straight condition as the strain is relieved, or when disconnected or taken out of the castings, which secure it to the end pieces.
The casting O has a flange or lip'c on its inner edge, which isprovided with a recess or seat for rod 0 to rest in, said seat maintaining the rod in parallel relation with the screw-bolt when the power is applied to stretch the fabric.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An elastic bed-bottom composed of an elastic fabric attached to end rails, as B, one of said railsbeing provided with a casting, as G, and the other of said rails being provided with a socket O in combination with arod 0, adapted to slide through an opening in said casting 0 and enter the socket G and a screw-bolt E, engaging the rod 0, and the casting C for stretching the fabric, as specified.
-2. In a bed-bottom of the class described, and in combination with a longitudinal bar, the casting 0, adapted to be secured to the end rail, having a projection, as 0, provided with an opening sufficient to pass the longitudinal bar, and a threaded opening for a screw-bolt E, engaging a projecting part of said bar, as and for the purpose specified.
