EXTENMON BED.
No. 326,918. Pateted Sept. '22, 1885.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HATTIE B. PRITGHARD, OF ARNOLDSBURG, VEST VIRGINIA.
EXTENSION-BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 326,9l8,dated September 22, 1885.
Application filed April 25, 1885. (No model.)
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HATTIEB. PRITOHARD, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Arnoldsburg,in the county of Calhoun and State of \Vest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension- Beds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of themvention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure l is a perspective view of my improved extension-bed, showing the same in its closed position. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the bed, showing the same extended. Fig. 3 is an end view of the bed, showing the same in its extended position. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view taken on the line or x in Fig. 3.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A designates the head-board, and B the foot board, of my improved bedstead, .each of which is constructed, as herein shown, of a pair of posts, U 0, provided with laterally-extending arms or slides D D, which are grooved and tongued together, and provided at their ends with stops E E, which, while they admit of the extension of the slides, prevent the sections of the bed from being drawn apart.
The corner-posts of the bedstead are connected in the usual manner by the side rails, F F, which are provided with sockets G G to receive lugs II H extending downwardly from the outer ends of the slats. The latter are arranged in alternate order at the two sides of the bed, and their inner ends extend into a slot, I, in a longitudinal supporting-bar, J, the ends of which are mounted in the inner ends of the lower arms or slides D of one of the sides or sections of the bed.
Secured pivotally to diagonally-opposite corner-posts of the bedstead is a pair of rods or braces, K K, which, when the device is used in its folded position or as a single bed may rest in a pair of brackets, L L, secured to the inner sides of the side rails. When the bed is extended, these rods or braces are swung out to the position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and supported upon brackets M M at the opposite cornerposts, thereby keeping the two sliding sections of the bed securely apart and preventing it from collapsing.
The operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed.
The construction of the device is simple and inexpensive, and when folded it will occupy no more room than'an ordinary single bed.
The appearance of the bed is neat, and it may be made as ornamental as may be desired by constructing the ornaments for the head and foot boards of sliding sections in a manner which will readily suggest itself.
I am aware that it is not broadly new to construct extensionbedsteadshaving a brace upon the under side that can be placed lengthwise of the bed when not in use, and I am also aware that they have been made with a stationary guide-rail in the center, upon which all the slats move, and I do not claim such construction; but
I. claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent of the United Slates 1. In an extension-bed as described, a suitable pair of braces pivotally secured at the diagonally-opposite posts, a support for each brace secured to each of the side rails, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In an extension-bed as described, alongitudinally-slotted guide-rail secured to the ends of the slats of one side, and sliding in slots in the foot and head board as the bed is opened and closed, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
, HATTIE B. PRITCHARD.
