F. C. HANNAHS.
BACK FOR GRIBS.
Patented Nov. 26, 1889.
My PEIERS Fhnln-Likhogmpher, Washinglom n.6,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRED O. HANNAHS, OF KENOSHA, IVISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHNSON A. JACKSON, OF SAME PLACE.
RACK FOR CRIBS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 416,102, dated November 26, 1889. Application filed February 19, 1889. Serial No. 300,443- (No model.)
To" all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRED C. I-IANNAHS, of Kenosha, in the county of Kenosha and State of \Visconsin, have invented new .and useful Improvements in Racks for Cribs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
My invention relates to a rack for that 'class of cribs commonly used for beds for children, and the rack is adapted for use to increase the height of the railing about a portion of the crib, and is so constructed that it may be neatly and compactly folded down, and thus effectually put out of the way when not needed as a guard above the railing of the crib.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a crib with my improved rack attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a section of the frame and rail of the crib and of my rack, showing the method of a1 taching it to the crib. Fig. 3 illustrates the method of folding the rack down within the railing of the crib and its position when so folded. Fig. 4 is avertical cross-section of one side of my improved rack and the rail of the crib on line 3 y of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail.
The same letters refer to like parts in all the views.
The frame of the crib, consisting of the side rails A A and end pieces B B, is pro-. vided with a woven-wire-mattress bottom and is supported by legs. A rail 0 about the crib is supported upon and above the rails A A and end pieces B B by a series of spindles D D. Two bars or rails E E at each side of the crib, one above the other and connected together at one end by the two rods or rails F F, are supported upon the crib by means of the uprights G G, two on each side. The rails E E are each secured pivotally to the uprights G G, preferably by means of bolts or pins H H, and these uprights at their lower ends are each secured pivotally and adjustably to a bracket M by means of the headed bolt or screw K, passing through a slot 1 in the upright G and fixed in the bracket M. The uprights G G are also pro- I vided with reversely-turned lugs L L integral therewith, forming clasps adapted to receive and fit upon the body of the brackets M M and to slide above and be released from the bracket when the upri ht is elevated as high as permitted by the pin K in the slot 1.
The brackets M M are secured at their respective ends to the rails of the crib A and O, and are so formed that the main or body part of each is vertical and somewhat wider than its extreme upper end, whereby the lugs or clasps L Lare adapted to fit upon and slide off of the upper end of the body partof thebracket. It will be understood that by means of this construction the uprights G G may be placed in the vertical position shown in Fig. 1, with their lower ends secured to the respective brackets M M by means of the headed bolts K K, and will be secured in this upright position by the clasps L L, sliding down upon and engaging the brackets M M,
and when the uprights are so held the rails E E are at a distance apart one above the other and above and a little inside of the rails O O, and that by slightly raising the uprights G G, as permitted by the headed bolts K K in slots I I, the clasps L L will be raised above the bodies of the brackets M M and will be released therefrom, whereby the uprights. may be tilted over and the rails E E brought down close within and alongside of the rails C O in the position shown in Fig. 3.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with a crib, a collapsible rack located above the crib, consisting of longitudinal side rails E E, end rails F F, severally affixed to and connecting the side rails at one end, uprights G G, pivoted to the side rails E E and provided with clasps L L and slots I I, brackets M M, secured to the rails of the crib, and headed bolts K K, securing the uprights G G movably to the brackets M M, the clasps L L being adapted to engage with the brackets M M, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRED O. IIANNAHS.
