' BEDSTEAD.
No. 823,152. Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 15,1905. Serial No. 274,291.
Since the hollow arms 6 and 7 corresponding solid arms 3 and understood that th moved toward and To rtZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT F. a citizen of the United receive the 4, it will be e posts 1 and 2 may be away from each other, the arms 3 and 4 telescoping with the arms 6 and 7, the vertical supports 5 of the solid d 4 passing through the said slots 8 as j and 9 of the hollow arms 6 and7 when the art to which head-posts 1 and 2 are moved toward and it appertains to make and use the same. away om each other.
is invention relates to bedsteads. In order to facilitate the sliding movement ne object of the invention is to of the arms 3 and 4 within the respective hollow arms 6 and 7, I enlarge the inner ends of the hollow arms 6 and 7, as at 11 and 12, respectively, and dispose a roller 13 at the top Another object of the invention resides in of the enlarged ends of said hollow arms and he provision of a simple, inexpensive, dura secure another roller 14 to the inner end 01' ble, and efficient bedstead of such nature that each of the solid arms 3 and 4. By reason of it may be easily collapsed to occupy small th space or converted into a single or double bedstead.
gle or double bedstead.
Since the foot-posts 15 and vided with the same character of arms as the cad-posts 1 and 2, it is tailed explanation is entirely unnecessary. However, reference to the drawings will disclose that the footposts 15 and 16 each have a hollow side rail 17 and 18, adapted to receive the solid side rails 19 and 20 of the head-posts 1 and 2, respectively. By reason of the telescopic arrangement of these side rails the head and foot board may be moved toward and awa the bedstead may occupy small space in transportation or in I be observed that the mner ends of the hollow members 17 and 18 are enlarged, as at 21, and each provided in its enlarged portion and at the top with a the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim, it eing understood that c anges in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made within the scope of the claim without he spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of t e present invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the bedstead. Fig. 2 is a View on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end view. Fi 4 is an enlarged detail view illustrating the telescoping connection of the head portion of the bedstead. ig. 5 is a view on line 5 5 of Fig. 1, illustrating the telescoping connection of the side rails.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the reference characters 1 and 2 designate the head-posts, the head-post 1 having up er and lower solid arms 3 and 4, connected by a series of vertical bars 5. The ost 2 is provided with upper and lower holl bw arms 6 and 7 for the re ception of the solid site head-post 1.
ready movement of the head and foot portions of the bedstead toward and away from each other.
My bedstead is preferably composed of iron or other suitable metal, and it will be seen that the hollow sections of the bedstead f a D shape in cross-section. the hollow sections in cross-section, and so long as they slidably receive the solid sections of the bedstead it arms 3 and 4 of the oppo- The hollow arm 6 has its under face slotted, as at 8, while the lower hollow bar 7 has upper face slotted, as at 9, adjacent which slots and connecting the said hollow arms is a series of vertical bars 10, corresponding to the aforesaid vertical bags 5, arranged between the solid arms 3 an 4 Patented June 12, 1906.
will be understood that I do not limit myself to the particular form of hollow castings or sections illustrated in the drawings. T e lower portion of the hollow rails 17 and 18 are each provided with a longitudinal slot 23 to receive inwardly-extending slat-supports 24, carried by the solid rail-sections 19 an 20 when the rail-sections are collapsed, there being slat-supports carried by the inner face of each hollow rail-section adjacent its longitudinal slot 23. It will therefore be understood that the slat- supports 24 and 25, respectively, of the solid and hollow rails will not interfere with the collapsing movement of the head and foot portions of the bedstead to ward and away from each other.
It is obvious from the foregoing that when the head and foot portions of the bedstead are moved toward each other the bedstead may be converted from a double into a single bedstead, and I will state that, if desired, the bedstead may be used as a crib or the like when the head and foot portions are moved toward each other.
What is claimed is- A bedstead comprising head and foot portions including posts, one post of the head and foot portions each having upper an lower solid arms connected by vertlcal bars,
each upper and lower arm of said foot portions having a roller at its inner end, the opposite post of the head and foot portions eac having upper and lower hollow arms for the reception of the corresponding upper and lower solid arms of the respective posts of the head and foot portions, the inner end of each of the hollow arms bein provided with a roller for cooperation wit the roller at the inner end of each of the solid arms to reduce friction when the solid arms are moved into and out of the hollow arms, the u per and lower hollow arms of the respective liead and foot posts being connected by vertical bars, each upper hollow arm of the respective head longitudinal slot in its under face and each lower hollow arm having a longitudinal slot in its upper face for alinement with the aforesaid slot whereby the aforesaid vertical bars connecting the solid arms may pass throughthe hollow arms and telescoping side rails connecting the head and foot posts.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
