Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. SGHMID, a citizen of the United States, residing at W'abash, in the county of Wabash and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Swings, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to improvements in the construction of porch swings or benches, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a swing or bench of this character which shall be of a strong and effective construction but which may be knocked down or collapsed to provide a small bundle when not required for use or for shipment.

A further object of the invention is to provide a bench or swing which is formed of removable and interchangeable members which will not require the employment of permanent or non-removable securing elements for retaining the same in its set up position.

Another object of the invention is to construct a bench or swing of metallic side members and a central metallic reinforcing member, to connect the said metallic members with wooden slats which pass through suitable openings in the same and to provide removable dowel pins to contact with the opposite edges of the side members and with the central member adjacent the opposite ends thereof to retain the device in set up position, and to provide means consisting merely in the removal of the dowels and the withdrawal of the slats for collapsing the device.

. With the above and other objects in view, the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claims.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device set up as a porch swing, Fig. 2 is a greatly enlarged side elevation of the same, the supporting chains being removed, Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail elevation looking toward one of the ends of the swing, Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view on the line a.a of Fig. 2, Fig. 5 is a similar sec tional view on the line 6-?) of Fig. 2, Fig. 6 is a sectional view on the line 0-0 of Fig. 2, Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of one of the end members or braces of the swing, Fig. 8 is a similar perspective view of the central member or brace, Fig. 9 is a detail -of the invention to provide a stretcher of this class which may be readily collapsed and folded into a small package especially 3 for storage, as furniture of this nature is only required for use during certain seasons of the year and their exposure to certain elements would result in their destruction.

The improvement contemplates the employment of two similar side members which are preferably constructed of metal and which are designated by the numerals 11 and each includes a seat portion 2, a back portion 3 and arm rests 4. The seat and back portions 2 and 3 are of a greater thickness than the remainder of the hangers,and the seat portions at the ends thereof are provided with integral outwardly extending flanges 5, while likewise the back portions 3 at the upper extremities thereof are formed with outwardly extending flanges 6. The flanges 5 and 6 are provided with suitable openings to receive the end links in supporting chains 77, one of said chains being secured to each of the flanges or brackets, and each pair of chains 7 is connected by a ring 8 having arranged thereon a chain extension 9 which is adapted to be connected to the screw eye or hook 10, the said screw eyes or hooks being screwed in the top wall of a porch or other suitable overhead support.

A reinforcing rib or web 11 is formed with the underface of each of the hangers at the juncture of the seat 2 with the back 3, and the substantially wider metal providing the said seat and back is formed with a plurality of transverse openings 12, each of said openings being elongated and adapted to snugly receive each a wooden slat 13. The outer face of each of the hangers 1, centrally of the openings 12, is formed with enlargements or bosses 14, each of the said bosses being centrally provided with circular dep essions 15 and similar bosses 16 having central depressions 17 may be formed upon the opposite side of the bosses 14 at the end of the seat and back portion'of the members 1. All of the slats 13 adjacent their ends are centrally provided with rounded openings 18 through which .are passed dowel pins 19 which tightly engage with the walls provided by the said openings and which also contact with the rounded depressions 15 provided in the bosses 14:.

The end slats are provided with additional openings 20 which are spaced from theopenings 18 and which receive the dowels that enter the depression 17 in the bosses 16.

If desired, and as illustrated in Fig. 9 of the drawings, the hangers, at the ends thereof may be provided upon both of their sides with bosses which are arranged central and to the opposite sides of their slat openings, the slats for distinction being indicated by the numeral 31 and the hanger by the 'numeral 30. The bosses are notchedand the slats are provided with spaced openings. to receive dowel pins 33.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:

1. In a porch swing, brackets including each a seat portion and a back portion, said brackets having lateral spaced openings and having bosses centrally of the openings, said bosses being provided with central depressions, slats passing through the openings and dowel pins engaging the slats for retaining the same Within the openings and the hangers in spaced relation with each other.

2. A porch swing or the like including two end hangers, and a central bracket, the hangers and bracket being provided with alining transverse openings, slats passing through the openings, dowel pins passing through openings in the slats, certain of said dowel pins contacting with the outer faces of the hangers, certain of said dowel pins. also contacting with the inner faces of the hangers and certain dowel pins contacting with both the inner and outer faces of the bracket.
