TED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
' HENRY J'. SCI-IULTE, 0F FULLERTON, CALIFORNIA.
COLLASIBIE KNOCKDOWN BED.
Application filed August 21, 1918.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, HENRY J. Soi-ruime, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fullerton, in the county of Orange and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Knockdown Beds, of which the following is a specification. Y
My object is to make a collapsible knock down bed especially adapted for camping purposes and my invention consists of the novel` features herein shown, described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a perspective of a collapsible knock down bed embodying the principle of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional detail on the line 2 2 of Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional detail on the lines 3-3 of Figs. 2 and 4.
F ig. l is a fragmentary vertical cross scction on the line 1 -4f of Fig. 2.
F ig. 5 is an end View sho-wing the bed knocked down, collapsed and folded for transportation.
Fig. G is a fragmentary inside elevation of the joint in one of the side bars.
The cross bar 1 is a stick of wood long enough to reach across one end of the bed. U shaped plates are secured to the ends of the cross bar l, the ends of the plates straddling the ends of the cross bar so as to form pintle sockets 2 and Legs il and 5 are pivotally connected at their upper ends to the inner faces of the ends of the cross bar l and folding braces 6 and 7 co-nnectthe intermediate portions of the legs to the intermediateportions of the cross bar so that the legs will fold inwardly against the cross bar and fold outwardly to or beyond vertical positions to support the cross bar. Each leg 4 and 5 is connected with the cross bar by placing the end 8 of the leg against the face of the cross bar and placing an angle iron 9 against the inner side of the end 8 and driving a nail 10 through one fiange of the' angle iron, through the end 8 and into the cross bar 1 and driving the nails 11 through the other flange of the angle iron into the end of the cross bar 1. The
Speciicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 21, 1919i Serial No. 250,834.
angl-e irons 9 are applied before the sockets 2 and 3 are applied.
in a like manner a cross bar 12 has legs 13 and 111; and pintle sockets 15 and 16. The elastic fabric 17 is placed in position with its ends upon the cross bars 1 and 12 and the ends of the fabric are secured to the cross bars by boards 18 and 19 placed upon the ends of the fabric and nailed to the cross bars 1 and 12. The removable folding side bars 20 and 21 are each made in two pieces 22 and 23 connected together by hinges 24, the pieces 22 and 23 having pintles 25 and 26 upon their outer ends. The meeting faces 27 of the pieces 22 and 23 are' slightly beveled to shorten the upper sides of the pieces so that when the pintles 25 and 2G are applied to the sockets 3 and 16 and 2 and 15 and the centers of the side bars pressed downwardly to bring the faces 27 together, the centers or hinges 24 will snap (flownwardly beyond a straight line so as to held the side bars stiff to resist the tension ofthe fabric 17 and support the bedding and occupant of the bed.
Each side bar 2O and 21 is pro-vided with a spring catch 28. The spring catch 28 coniprises a spring strap having an attaching portion 29 secured to the inner face of the piece and a free spring end 3() extending along' the inner face of the piece 23 and a handle 31 extending inwardly from the free end 30. The tooth extends rigidly inwardly from the face of the piece 23 the tooth being inclined upon its lower face so that the spring end 30 will snap over the tooth when the side bar is unfolded and catch the straightV side of the tooth to hold the side bar from folding'.
When it is desired to knock down, collapse and bundle the bed for transportation, the spring catches 28 are disengaged, the side bars are bent upwardly upon the hinges 24, then the side bars are removed from the sockets, the legs folded inwardly, the fabric 9 and end bars rolled together and the' folded side bars placed in the roll.
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention as claimed.
I claim:
In it collapsible knock down bed a removable folding side bar comprising two timbers fitting together end to end, e hinge secured 5 to the lower aeeof the timbers, at spring strap secured to the side face of one timber and extending along the side of the Vface hold the timbers from swinging on thehinge.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
HENRY J. SCHULTE.
